I have a 6 month old hen who i found out was hopping on one leg. She was not using hetr right leg. She was either flying or hopping. I think it is a sprained leg. She doesnt seem to be ill. But i don't want to wait untill she is. Is there a web site or something that will help me find out how to mend a hurt leg for a chicken. I have called a vet and asked but they told me to spen $150 dollars fixing a broken leg. I have seen people fix hurt legs on owls and stuff like that. So i would like to learn how myself.

well my parents have ducks, chickens, wilde geese etc... but one of their hens had a broken leg and my dad did not want to spend any money fixing a chicken!! lol what we did was put the leg back in place and ductape a peice of wood to its leg, kind of like a ghetto brace/cast thing... sounds completely gimp/ghetto or whatever but it DEFINATELY worked, it helped set her leg back into place and heel and let her walk around normally. And this hen is still around layin eggs to this day, her leg only has a little bump fromwhere it was broken, other than that she's walkin runnin flappin round fine!! if you leave it it will set into place but into the wrong place and be unhealthy for her, so i hope i helped some, GOODLUCK!

Others have told you how to splint a chicken's broken leg, but I will add this: the leg may not be broken, only sprained. If it looks all right but she just isn't using it, it's probably a sprain. You may or may not want to bandage it, since she is not putting weight on it anyway. But it is best to allow some motion in a sprain. A sprain can take up to 6 weeks to heal, depending on how bad it is, but it does heal. Try to keep her quiet until it does.

Keep the leg in alignment (its natural position). Try to make a splint with Popsicle sticks placed on two sides and secure with tape. It should heal quickly and a splint allows for swelling which does subside.Have a great year.
