Its best to have a local friend to buy for you; much less likely to be ripped-off on the price. Applies to many things, not just medicine.

I'm from Thailand and have been living there since birth till age 20. Now I still visit there every 3 years. Just last year, I went there. My family live there and still get medication from their phamacist without any prescriptions. My mom has diabetics and self prescribed with insulin shots from her phamacist without any prescription from her doctor. Scary, isn't it? Just 3 months ago, I read the Thai news online that the Thai health department is proposing a regulation for a phamacist to have a prescription from a doctor in order to sell prescibed medication. In your case, if you know a Thai, I guess you can have he/she buy it for you but as a tourist, I'm not sure if they will sell you the sedatives/pain killers.

Not too big a problem. Don't "act" like a tourist and ask locals for contacts. I've bought Vicodin, Valium, Ambien and Viagra without a script. Smaller, late night pharmacys are more eager to sell.....they like the money.
