I just got a new dachshund today. He's really sweet and he's gentle with my 9 mo. old but he seems to whine a lot. If I leave the room for 2 seconds he freaks and whines. When I left today to buy his crate when I got back an hour later he was screeching and hollering like he was being killed! I can't understand that. Is that a dachshund thing or is there something wrong with him? I got him from another family who has 2 kids but to my knowlege he was great to them and gave them no problems and had good health. He's a lot different from my very laid back pekinese. What are some characteristics of a 1 yr. old male dachshund?

He does calm down after awhile and just lay on the couch next to me or somewhere close by. He just gets so excited and starts screeching like he's being hurt. He seems to be a very sensitive pup, but I won't give him up! He's just too much of a sweetie.

This sounds normal, especially since he is new to your family. Try bonding a bit more. Ours did the same, whining and howling and screeching (with sadness when we left, then with excitement when we returned.) The trainer explained it like this: The dog gets upset when someone leaves the "pack." It experiences A LOT of anxiety when a packmember leaves. BUT, if you establish yourself as the pack leader, then he will worry less when you leave. What we did was to establish 'Stay!' when we left. That makes them know, you are in charge of the comings and goings at the house. Then, to come and go at shorter intervals, and treat when you get back (and if they havent shredded anything, of course)! Go get the mail, come back. Take out the trash, come back. You may want to look into a trainer, but learning the stay command is pretty easy, and can be found in any good dog training manual. Now my doxie (still screeches with excitement when I get home) but does not have terrible anxiety when I leave. Congratulations on the new pup.

Your dog is sad because he miss the other family. That will last for at least three to fours days. The dog whines probably because he is spoiled, the other family gave him too much attention and now he is asking for that. I have a 1 1/2 year old miniature dachshund and my father likes to put him on his lap all day long, and because of that he cries at night hoping one of us do the same thing. I suggest you gave him attention but when he have his tantrum you need to ignore him and he eventually will calm down. The veterinarian told me that those breed of dogs are for adults because they demand a lot of attention.

Since you just got him from another family he is probably having some seperation anxiety. To him he just lost his other family that he loved and that is very confusing to the little guy. He probably thinks that when you leave, that you will not come back either. I would just be patient and I wouldnt scold him when he is doing this. Offer him treats when you come home and give him lots of love. Eventually he will see that you are not leaving forever and should stop. Unfortunately, he may continue this on forever if he cannot get over the seperation issue.

Best of luck

He is having a little separation anxiety. He misses his old family. He is in a new home. It is not unusual for dogs to cry when they are in a new place. Give him a few days to get alimented. Don't be surprised if he cries when you put him in his crate at night. This will happen for the first few nights as well. Don't give in and let him out because he is crying because he he will never get use to it. Just have patience he will adjust soon enough.

They need constant attention. I use to tie mine up when he was a puppy and he would cry and cry even if he was only a few feet away. He is about 11 years old now, but they are the best dogs you could ever have. Expect alot of barking, whining, and picking him up.

He just needs to settle in to you and your house. If he was with a family before, he may be scared in new surroundings. Give him lots of attention and things to do while you're gone... i.e. chew toys etc. Dachsunds are very loyal and sweet dogs... just give him a little time.
