They have weak backs (jumping is discouraged) but is sitting up straight bad for them? Mine does it as a 'trick' all the time now.

It is a normal behavior but should not be encouraged particularly in long backed dogs like dachshund and basset hounds...as it will contribute to their back problems they are already prone to.

Seems to be a trait of the breed (I have 2 who do it) -- I don't let mine sit up for more than several seconds, mostly because I'm afraid they'll lose balance! Probably not terribly bad for them, and hard to stop them!

The best way to protect your Dachshunds back is to keep them in good weight.

PS -- Love the little drawing! :)

http://dachshundlove.blogspot.com/2010/01/aint-too-proud-to-beg-but-is-it-ok-for.html - Looks like it can strengthen the muscles and help them in the long run. Of course there will be a few dogs that hurt themselves, but like going up and down stairs, jumping on furniture, or any activity, there is a chance for injury. Moderation is a good thing.

No, mine has been doing it for about 7 years with no back problems. It is funny though since I've never seen any other type of dog do this. :)

My dog hurt his back because of that. Be careful of little dogs because the put all their weight on their backs making the disks more fragiles. I had to take my dog to a quiropractic to gave him terapy and he never get better.

My aunt's dog used to do that and he slipped a disk in his back. He was in alot of pain so they put him down. I know it was sad for her and I don't want the same thing to happen to anybody else.

No, it's not bad. Mine always did that until she got too old. The dog wouldn't do it if it was painful.
