raki is a copy of a greek alcoholic drink, that muslim turks, copied from the greeks when they came from central asia.
if you want to taste the original one, search in greek stores in california, for "raki" or "tsikoudia" or the cypriot drink "zivania" (it's the same with different name)
raki is made from grapes.
some other interesting tastes from grapes are ouzo and mastic

Raki, the national alcoholic drink of Turkey, tastes very strongly of anise-seed (licorice)... Some like it!

It tastes like licorice. It's traditionally consumed with meze, small dishes like roast eggplant and cheese that can precede a main course or make up a meal entirely on its own. It's a love it or hate it sort of thing.
Ouzo (Greek), Arak (Lebanese) and Sambucca (Italian) are nearly the same thing.

It's quite similar to anisette and ouzo, which should be available at any liquor store.
