ECT is still used today. When used in the right instances, it can be very beneficial...especially in cases of severe depression. Not only have I heard of it, I have seen it administered on many occasions.

What do I think? I think if all other options have been tried without success, it is definitely a viable option. Please remember, it is done very humanely...not as pictured in old movies. The patient is under anesthesia when it is performed. Their muscles are temporarily paralyzed to prevent injury. Evidence that the seizure has occurred is: twitching toes, an increased heart rate, clenched fists or a chest heave. An EEG (brain tracing) will show changes during the seizure and these changes will level off when the seizure is over. During the procedure, the patient feels no pain! After the procedure, the patient may have a headache, nausea, temporary confusion and muscle stiffness.
