i am from southern california. i am considering portland, because it is much cheaper to live there, they have good public transportation, it is healthy, gay friendly, liberal, artistic, etc. i don't know if i could adapt to rainy, cloudy weather, or if there are a lot of things to do there. i visited portland last year, but it was in the summer, and it was hot every day.

Hi, Portland is great...they do have quite a bit of rain, but during the summer and fall it is super nice. It's a very health conscious place to live as well. I go there a lot as my best friend lives there. There are a million things to do there, and a trip to the coast isn't too far either. :)

I lived in Portland for over two years. It was AWESOME.I loved it.The whole city is a diverse and wonderful population. The way the city is set up is always interesting from Beaverton to the Hawthorn District to the water front always something exciting.Come on.. whats there not to like. The coast 265 miles of no ocuppied beaches and natural rain forrest coast..The most beautiful in the world to the cascades just minutes away .Mt Hood view everyday and great skiing and Timberline lodge at the summit always fun for a weekend get away. The Met...Is public transportation that has access to over 100's of miles of right of way crossing and roads to almost anywhere in Portland or surrounding areas for little or nothing fares..The Hawthorne district is a combination, artist, liberals and mother earth people really nice people. Please don't believe the myth that most Portland people would love you to believe about the rain. They throw a unbrella up at the first sign of moisture on a beautiful misty rain day..They have perpetuated this myth to keep people away..Happens some in Seattle but not Portland with one exception. We went to the Philippines last year with a lay over in Seattle for a day or two.I took my wife to see my Oregon. It was pouring harder than I have ever seen and just our luck was one time it really rained there that I know of. Portland lies in a protected valley ..The climate there is awesome. Its highs can reach 90 but maybe a week at the most .. most people don't even have air condition.dont need it. Summer nights are in the comfortable 50's or high 40's and days in summer generally around 70 .. very seldom makes 80 or 90 .The winters are mild with lows about 30 and very seldom high above 50 ..its very comfortable. There are millions of things to do there and loved living there. A family emergency brought me back permantly to the other side of the country but I have given talk after talk and convinced many person to move there at the very least to visit and even by property there. You must have not been there too long last summer and remember last year was a hot one on record and since we have greenhouse one year its hot on the west coast the next hot on the east..So remember that when you are thinking about moving there.

I don't live there any more but the Portland area is a great place to live if you like the outdoors. True it rains a lot but the city has adapted to that. There is lots to do inside on rainy days but on clear days, wow, it doesn't get a whole lot better than the parkway of the Columbia River. You will never be able to see it all! It has some of the best scenery in the US!
Just a thought, if you are really considering it because of cost of living, move in across the river in one of the newer communities on the Washington side. Then you can drive in, use the public transportation in the free zone, shop on the Oregon side and pay no sales tax and live on the Washington side and pay no income tax! The best of both worlds.
Best of luck!

Well, we just moved to Portland from central CA a couple of months ago, and are GLAD we did !! There are TONS of things to do and to look at. Also, it's so green, hilly, clean....trees, creeks and greenbelts everywhere. The shopping is awesome, people are nice, not too many psychos on the freeways. So it rains a lot, that's what keeps things green !!! I've met a number of people from Southern California, and not one of them would ever want to move back there ! So.......try it and good luck !

Portland can be beautiful, and I hear that people really like living there. But, coming from SoCal, you are going to have a huge, depressing adjustment to the dismal, foggy, cloudy, rainy mess that is Oregon weather. If you can ignore the weather completely, you will probably be fine. (But, I wouldn't move there for any amount of money, since it's all about weather to me.)

The rain is the price you pay for the green. I don't even notice it, but I know native Oregonians who get crazy during the rainy seasons.
Use an umbrella and we'll know you're from California. We just wear parkas with the hood up.

Move to Seattle. It's much better. When you compare Portland to Seattle, you'll see that Seattle has more to offer, and their weather is much better.

About as much as in California. I'm in California now. I'd send people I really dislike here. That's why I'm leaving. Ha.

5% Property taxes in Portland.
A 200k home is 10k/year in taxes
A multi million dollar home in CA might not have those taxes.
