In the UK we have what is called the Freedom of Information Act, 1 January 2005. If you feel compelled to vet them for offences within the Armed Forces, find out through the MOD (Ministry of Defence...they will have a record of said offence which they must disclose unless he was involved in Black Ops. covert ops.
The other way is to ask the person, maybe they will be open with what they did...do not be to hasty to judge.

If you know what county or state it happened in, then all you need to do is contact your Federal Marshall. If you don't know the area in which it happened then where you are living , just call the Federal Marshall and he/she can find the information your searching for. It is Public Information, when we ask questions like this. They are really kind and will help you. All ya gotta do is ask. Military will not give out that information, but Federal Marshall's will.

Do a yahoo people search. When you find the person, you can have a background check done. However, I don't know if it states what the person had done. It does cost a fee though.

i think this depends on what crime and whether they had a trial.

I think if they don't have a trial it is unlikely to get reported in any of the law reports.

Another way is to search through newspaper reports for that area around that time.

Ask them. If they know you well enough they'll tell you. If not, then it's none of your business anyway.
