I've had hives for about three weeks now.

Is it possible to suddenly develop an allergy to a shampoo you've been using for about six months?

Also, is it feasible that it would make you break out all over your body (I don't think there's been a spot on me that hasn't been broken out in hives -- scalp, tops of feet, palms of hands, back, you name it, it's been hivey) instead of just your head/neck?

You should definitely check with your doctor. It is possible that it could be an allergy to shampoo considering the fact that it runs down all over your body as you rinse and it has impacted your scalp; however, more serious allergies could also be possible. While your body can react to allergies late after use, or develop new ones to a used product, it could be something besides the shampoo. Consult your doctor soon if you have not already.

I broke out with hives everytime I washed my hair for the last 6 months. I changed shampoos, conditioners, even the laudry soap I used to wash my towels. After months of going crazy my allergist found that I had several food allergies. One of which was peanuts and another was sunflower seeds. I thought I was having a nice healthy snack, but what I was doing was feeding the monster. I cut out all of my allergy food and I haven't had hives now for 3 weeks.
One of the things to look out for in your shampoo my be Ammonium and Aluminum. During my search for answers a lady at a health food store suggested that they may be the culprits.
If it continues you should see a doctor.

There is so much chemical related junk in the products that we use on an everyday basis that I am sure it could be the problem. I found out there is novacaine in the babies shampoo and that is why it doesn't sting there eyes. I have gone to almost all natural cleaning and bathing products. If you want to know more I would be happy to talk to you.

well most cases yes you can become allergic to anything even after using it for years. an allergic reaction is most commonly found near the area infected with the item or product your allergic to. now considering when you rinse your hair its flowing down your body and that could be the case but... try retracing any other things you may have just started doing out of your normal. maby like supplements or even a new body-wash or bar-soap. try using benadrill to see if these affects go away. if they don't seem to stop quit using the new things you introduced into your life just recently. if it hurts don't do it again! its your body's way of telling you to stop!
