Pushups work out your chest and shoulders. Pushups are not good to lose weight. To lose weight you need to do aerobic or cardio exercise like running, swimming, biking, etc. Also food intake is important. AVOID fast food and sugary snacks.

It could...if you combine them with a proper diet. While muscle does weigh more than fat, doing pushups alone will not build up enough to make a difference. You will be more toned than anything. Besides your chest and shoulders, they also work your triceps.

Are you trying to lose weight or lose fat? If its fat you are after push ups will work fine because they build muscle and consume calories. The basics of any exercise/weight loss plan is to burn more calories than you consume. If you do that you will lose weight. If you also work out you will lose fat while gaining muscles.
