I had a '69 Plymouth Road Runner with the 383cid and an automatic transmission. The engine was completely stock including the Carter AVS four-barrel carburetor. It averaged 13mpg with the 3.55 ratio rear axle and 14mpg when I changed it to the 2.76 ratio. The worst mileage was 9mpg. The several 318s (5.2 L) I have owned, including all three generations of engines this size, averaged 15mpg. You may want to check to see if your speedometer/odometer is accurate. Tire/wheel sizes and axle ratios could have been changed in the past 37 years. I changed the speedometer pinion to compensate for the axle ratio change on my Road Runner.

Check the timing, including the vacuum advance.

Check for normal vacuum at idle.

Check spark plug gaps.

Verify that the carb is the correct size for the engine and verify correct float level.

Be careful how you drive it. Rapid acceleration = poor gas mileage.

9 mpg is pretty good for that car/motor combo. That is a HUGE 8cyl motor in a very heavy car 9 mpg is good if you do not believe me look up the original specs for that car and you will see that 9 mpg is good for the General Lee.........
