Be really careful purchasing miles from people. Almost all airlines say this is a violation of the miles program and while it is definitely possible to do it without being caught, your problems if you do get caught are huge-- the buyer will have to purchase a new ticket for the flight on-the-spot and the seller will probably have their miles account locked. I have a ton of miles and would never consider selling them because I really don't want to have my account taken away!

You can purchase points at points.com but the fees they charge are often worth more than the points themselves.

Best move is to purchase them directly from the airline you are travelling with. Most airlines sell them for about 3-5 cents per mile; they charge a transaction fee as well, usually around $25, and the number of miles you need for your upgrade will vary with airline and flight and fare class (purchase class like Y or B, not cabin class like economy). For an International flight you'll need somewhere around 20,000-60,000 miles.

Also look into the airline's credit card program; you can get up to 10,000 miles just for opening the account and making a purchase.

Before you do any of this, though, check with the airline to make sure there are upgrade seats available for your flight. Not all first class seats are available for an upgrade!

Almost all the plans offer the ability to buy additional miles, but generally, the rates are comparable to simply buying the ticket outright. If you were close to what you needed for the upgrade already, then it may be worth your while. Otherwise, I would advise against it.

I've heard of people transferring miles between individual accounts, but I'm not familiar with the process.

Yes - almost all airlines let you buy miles directly from them!!
Check the website of the airline - I bought some just last week from Continental!

Just build up your miles points with credit cards.
If you use it for business, you should acquire your points very quickly.
