The story comes from Genesis 18. The Lord visited Abraham by the great oaks of Mamre. While Abraham was sitting in the door of his tent in the heat of the day, the Lord, in the form of three men, visited Abraham. Abraham invited the Lord to sit in the shade and brought a meal for the visitors. There, after eating, the Lord foretold the birth of Isaac to Abraham through his wife, Sarah. Both of them were quite elderly; Sarah had ceased having her monthly cycles and was well past child bearing age. After the prophecy of Isaac's birth, the Lord revealed to Abraham His plan to destroy the cities of the plain, Sodom and Gomorah. The inhabitants of the cities were quite wicked and their sin warranted the destruction of the cities. (The word Sodom is the source of our word - sodomy, which means unnatural sexual practices.) Abraham bargained with the Lord, to try obtain a reprieve for the people there. At first Abraham besought God to forego the planned destruction, if he found 50 righteous people. God agreed not to destroy the cities, if there were 50 righteous people. Abraham, knowing the wickedness of the cities' people bargained with God; God said he would forego his plan of destruction if there were as few as 10 righteous people in the cities. Then God left Abraham. Later, 2 of the three who ate with Abraham arrived in the cities. Abraham's nephew, Lot, took them into his home. The people of the cities tried to have sex with the Angels of the Lord and Lot tried to stop the people of Sodom from this evil. He even went so far as to offer the people his daughters, who were virgins, but the men of the cities, not knowing who was in Lot's house, wanted to have their way with God. God struck the men outside Lot's door blind and then told Lot to pack up his wife and daughters and to leave the cities as destruction was coming. Lot tried to bring with him his daughters' boyfriends, but they would not go. Lot and his family left early the next morning. Soon, fire and brimstone rained down on Sodom and Gomorah and they were destroyed. During the rain of fire from heaven, Lot's wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt. Subsequently, Lot hid out in a cave with his daughters. The daughters thought that the three of them were the last people left on earth. The daughters made their father drunk and then had incestous sex with him. Each became pregnant. One became the mother of the Moab, from whom came the Moabites (these people figure in the story of Ruth - who is in Jesus' lineage); the other became the mother of Ammon, from whom came the Ammonites. There is still a city in Jordan with that name. (Although I think they call it Amman these days. It is the capital of the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan.)

Yes, they were so corrupt, that normally God would always send a messenger to warn any city before He would ever exact His justice and if they turned from their wickedness and repented, God would forgive them.
Sodom and Gommorrah were so bad, that if you imagine all the sins of today concentrated in two cities with literally NOBODY good, you'll get an idea of the foulness that went on. So bad it was, that God sent two angels into that city to warn a man called Lot and his family. They were the only people in these two whole cities that were at least relatively good. The rest were so far gone, that they were worse than animals. When the people saw the angels in human form come into their city, they actually followed them in lust, wanting to have sex with them, simply thinking they were young handsome men. The angels entered Lot's house, while the men outside demanded they bring these men out so they could do with them as they wished.
That should give you some idea of how foul they were. Nothing was beneath them. There is evidence that they also used to get their kicks out of torturing any passer by that happened to visit their city or walk through it. They apparently used to tie the person up, and starve them slowly.
The interesting and creepy thing about those cities, as that to this day they are still there, the entire area of made of ash, yet you can STILL see the basic outlines of the city itself, doorways, window posts etc. A skeleton was found also made of ash, but most were mixed within the ruins of the other ash.
Sulfur balls all around the city areas were discovered. Like nowhere in the world, they found the evidence that Sulfur and brimstone did indeed rain down upon them. You can still light them up a little. I've seen them, touched one and smelt it and lit it. You can get hold of some of them over there, people have been there and brought them back.
So there is no doubt this event did occur and I believe in God's words in the bible that correspond perfectly with what is seen.

short and sweet: they were two cities that was so overcome with sin that God told Aberham he would destroy the two cities but if he could find he could find 10 righteous men the city would be spared, God then destroyed the two cities.
The story could be found in Genesis : chapter 18& 19: 1-29

Yea the bible character Lot and his family was settled there. God told Abraham that he would destroy it unless he found I think 10 righteous people in the city. He didn't so two angels told Lot to get the heck out of there. They did, and the mom looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.
On a sidenote God told them not to look back.

These are two cities that God destroyed because of their wickedness. In the case of Sodom, Lot was living in the city with his family. God allowed him and his family to flee the city before it was destroyed but warned them not to look back. Lot's Wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.

Yah and the Godfather took care of them all and destroyed them mofo's with fire and brimstone. Don't mess with him man. Only Lot and his family survived, except for Lot's wife, she looked back when God told them not to look back to the cities and she was turned into a Pillar of salt apparently. And this is all LITERAL! YEAH!~
Btw, Lot was going to give his daughters to a crowd of angry man so they could do whatever they willed. And letter on I believe Lot even man have had relations with one of his daughters.

It is a story like the stories in the Arabian Nights.
Its essence is the morality about obedience to the One True God.
Man can do every thing in every way; if his soul is submissive to the will of God, he enjoys heavenly bliss, otherwise he dies in sorrows.

Ezekiel 16:49
Behold this was the sin of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness... and she did not strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
God punished them because of greed
