they make money by creating traffic flow into yahoo itself. the more you associate with yahoo the more you will use yahoo, shop yahoo, click yahoo, etc.

Here's my guess. Yahoo! Answers advertises other Yahoo! services by simply being a Yahoo! service. It's like the users are saying, "Hm, Answers is this good, so what about the rest of Yahoo?"

It's a relatively new venture so I would suspect they're compiling the data, IE hits, most popular categories, etc. Can you imagine the amount of ads they could sell with all their categories and sub-categories? It's a revenure machine just awating it's release, no doubt.

I reckon they collect statistics. Like for example; they would count how many times a day a person asks a common question like "does this boy/girl like me?"
Information like this could be sold to businesses or magazines or whoever would benefit out of it.
