I've gotten drum tabs off line and worked through them.
I cant afford lessons.

That lawsuit on tabs is ridiculous and will get thrown out imediately. But regardless, drum tabs are not the way to go. You want to be able to listen to a song and figure it out by ear. Most rock songs are all the same anyways with a basic rock beat variation. Get a book fo $15 and learn it on real sheet music like a real musician. Learn the basics including your rudiments (sounds lame, but a lot of kickass beats are simply variations of rudiments) then learn your basic rock beats that will be in the book. After that, listen to your favorite bands and you should be able to apply your new knowledge to that song. Its kind of the whole "Teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime" You don't wanna learn a song one at a time, you want to learn how to be able to play all songs from listening to it.

Well you need someone to show you atleast a little bit. The basic is to hit the high hat and the bass at the same time. Then hit the snare. So we''l call high hat and bass motion 1 and the snre motion 2. Now you would go 1212121212121212 and so on. its sort of tricky. Make sure that your high hat is to the left and that you are hiting it with your right hand. Your left hand will hit the snare. so your arms will be crisscrossed. Once you have that down you can learn almost any beat.

Good luck on getting 'free' tabs anymore. Most of the tab sites have been threatened with legal action in the last few months.

What worked for me (I couldn't afford lessons either as a kid) was listening INTENTLY to simple songs and breaking them down. As my ear got better, my playing got better, then I'd move on to more complex songs.

Also...I think www.vicfirth.com (makes sticks) has a real good tutorial section.

Get a metronome... and a rythm book, also some drum pads to drum on... they will all last a long time and are very useful.
