They usually try to keep it simple. In most cases: if the plug fits, it is the right one. To be sure, check the manual for the camcorder of look up the brand name of the camcorder on line (www.sony.com for example) and see if there is a help link.
Normally nothing will be harmed if you use the wrong cable, it just won't work.

Usually they use what is called a firewire cable. That transmits more data faster than a regular USB. But the main thing is to make sure than one end of the cable fits in the slot on the camcorder. You should have received a cable with your camcorder, one specially made for the camera. Read the instructions that came with it. But it should only be a matter of plugging the correct end into the camera and the other into the computer's regular USB port
