In college you can ask for a specific roommate, but your friend has to request the same dorms as you and also request you as their roommate.
If not you just get slammed with a person you haven't met. However I met some really good friends that way, don't knock strangers the college actually tries to put similar major together.

not sure what you are talking about..but if you are talking about in a dorm room...most places ask things about you and try to set you up with a roommate with the same interests. And you can also request a certain roommate if you know someone else going there...Good Luck

If talking about college, you should at least get a chance to switch rooms and roommates. At least by the 2nd or 3rd week of school you should be able to room with whoever you want to given you take the proper steps at your school to do so.
