It's not hereditary but some lung conditions are. Bronchitis is caused by a virus that affects your air passageways in your lungs causing them to become inflamed and produce more mucus, which is what you cough up.

It's a virus. If you get bronchitis once, you are more likely to get it again: chronic bronchitis. Bronchitis may turn into pneumonia as well.
