Is there such a thing as a good atheist?

2007-01-02 09:25:16 · answer #1 · answered by Sean 7 · 1 6

Since it rejects or denies the existence of God, atheism is a sin against the virtue of religion. However, this offense can be significantly lessened in virtue of the intentions and the circumstances. Believers themselves can sometimes have more than a little to do with the rise of atheism. To the extent that they are careless about their instruction in the faith, or present its teaching falsely, or even fail in their own religious, morel, or social life. But again, every person should "work out thou salvation in fear and trembling". As every person has the choice to do so and read and come to their conclusion.

So it is not known whether ALL atheists will go to Hell and whether all believers will avoid it. We were told in the bible by Christ, not to judge, but also He said "Not all who cry Lord Lord, will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of my Father". IN other words, people who say "All I need do is rely on Christ's salvation and I need not do anything else, I can act as I wish". They will be very surprised on the other side.

I should well imagine there will be some atheists who will get into Heaven before some Christians, as there is such a thing as believing with the tongue, believing in name, yet being a "practical atheist". And there may well be some atheists who behave more like Christians should, so let us not judge, but the infinite wisdom and mercy of God will exact the perfect jugement on each soul according to what he/she deserves.

You might wish to read yourself, as for me to go through the entire bible and try and pick out the appropriate quotes will take me a long time.

But I did give you the clue above about those who cry out with their mouth, are not necessarily saved. Christ pointed out the way, and He could not have been clearer on what sins woud lead a person there.

It truly does depend on whether an atheist is hell bent on rejecting God and whether he dies in that state, or not. But God looks at the intention of all hearts. I personally would not want to meet Him on the other side having denied His existance my whole life, and then use the excuse "well, it wasn't my fault, I was told evolution was a fact". I coudl very easily be told "You were given my word, you had the signature of design all around you in my creation, yet you did not even consider my existance".

This is just my view, I wouldn't gamble, but again, I would never condemn a person automatically because they had not come to a belief or faith in God.

First of all, in my view of Christianity, there is no hell for the idea of hell is fundamentally unjust. If we believe that God is just, how could an eternity of punishment be fair -- even if someone spent an entire lifetime of sin?

On the other hand, I do believe that people can choose God or not -- and that absence from God is itself a form of hell.

But that begs the question, what does it mean to "choose God"? I don't think its as simple as saying "I believe there is a being called God." I know far too many spouse and child abusers who believe there is a God. I wouldn't call them holy in any meaningful sense.

I believe that God is the source of all that is good, and that to the extent people pursue goodness, mercy, and justice - they are "choosing God" in the most important and meaningful of ways, regardless of whether they would pass a chatechism test. As such, I believe that "good athiests" will go to heaven, though I'm sure they will be shocked once they get there. =)

I think that it matters more if lived life doing your best for yourself, your family and others. (not exactly in that order) Why can't Atheists go to heaven? After all don't you think that's the only way they will learn there is a G*D. By meeting him? Just because someone doesn't believe in G*D Doesn't mean that they should go to heaven ( if such place exists). If you are looking for Bible references only than go read the bible!
Bye!
Edit: Nightshade you are an oxymoron!

There is no passage. Christians don't know their scriptures well.

Their doctrine is self defeating and has nothing to do with what Yeshua/Jesus taught. In fact it can be said that from a biblical prospective Atheist are as they should be, even to the point that the laws of God made them the way they are. Like the Jews they didn't believe because God made them so, in this case what punishment could there be?

Jase yeah according to Christian corrupted wordly doctrine Hitler would go to heaven and Ghandi would go to hell. Because they preceive life through Martin Luther's ignorance, not really what is in the Bible.

Just a quick response to all you christians out there who have just "confirmed" that Good Atheists would go to Hell...

Doesn't the very same Bible you claim to be quoting also say somewhere "Judge not lest ye be judged thyself"?

Can you honestly claim to be good christians when you seem to enjoy condemning others simply because they don't believe what you do?

Perhaps I'll see you all down there with me!

Mark 16:16: "He that believeth not, shall be damned."

I'm an atheist, so I don't really believe in any of that, but yeah, the Bible says they do, unless anyone can offer a contradictory passage.

Let's compare:

Adolf Hitler was born and raised in a Catholic family, and there is documented proof that Hitler was baptized. Many of his speeches were either inside of, or just outside of churches in Germany.

Ghandi was born and raised in a Hindu society, and has, to this very day, been the iconic stalwart of peace and happiness.

Are you really telling me that Hitler is in Heaven, and Ghandi burning in Hell?

I think Christians should stop telling atheists they're going to hell. Only God know who is going to hell.We should stop playing God and be ourselves. And if they are or do go to hell we Christians should feel bad for them not self-righteous. After all, if not for the grace of God... where would the Christians be?
