Bird leashes only cost $12 at petco and petsmart. Get the 'petite' size. Don't try to make your own as you could harm your cockatiels wings if doing it by harness. also, never tie anything around it's neck. Tying something to it's leg could break his leg or cause damage. $12 is a very small price to page.

I have made many leashes for small animals and birds.
You will have to be very careful and gentle and patient in convincing your cockatiel to let you put it on. If you are not careful, the bird will be upset and not like you. So go easy. If you can't get it on the first time without upsetting the bird, just quit and try again latter, always talking nicely to the bird to keep it calm. It is better not to have a leash than not to have a tame bird.
NEVER LEAVE THE LEASH ON WHEN YOU ARE NOT WITH THE BIRD.
So, here is the basic procedure for a figure-8 leash:
1. Get a piece of yarn or string that is soft, not too thick and not too thin.
2. Make a very small loop in one end (tie a loose loop around a pencil). Then put the other end of the string through the end loop, so you have a "lasso."
3. Put the end through the end loop again the same way, so you have a double lasso.
4. The first lasso loop (the one that doesn't tighten right away when you pull the leash) goes around the neck.
5. The second lasso loop goes around the body.
6. Tie another loop in the end where you hold the leash, for your convenience.
Note: to be practical, it is easier to undo the second lasso loop before putting it on the bird. Put lasso #1 around the neck, pass the string down behind one wing, under the breast, up behind the other wing, and through the small end loop.

first u have to ask urself the following question: do u want something that will be aestheticaly pleasing, or something that will keep ur cocktiel in place?

if the first answer is what u want then follow the following instructions: first go find some mangled seal carcass(i once found a lovely one on the half moon bay beach). then i would recomend taking the skin(if not to covered from oil spills) and cut it into thin triangular strips. with these strips u will then fashion it into a circular shape using the leftover christmas lights( if u dont celebrate christmas u will have some problems with this step). then it is ready for ur pet!!!

the other choice would be to find some barbed wire(like the kind that they tie onto the fences of correctional facilities) then form it into a lovely leash. this should also keep ur new cockatiel from moving or making too much noise.
i hope this was helpful:)

I raised Cockatiels for years and have never heard of a leash for them. Clip his wings and he will stay close to his cage since he won't be able to fly.

harnesses are cheap--just BUY one.
MAKING one is a horrible idea, your bird could very easily injure itself, and anyway, the cost of making one yourself would probably be the same as if you bought one.
