No. Your marital status for the entire 2006 tax year is determined by what your status is on 12/31/06. Since you were legally married on 12/31/06, you are considered married for the entire year for tax purposes.
There are only two filing status that you can claim: Married Filing Jointly (where you and your spouse combine your income and withholding credits) and Married Filing Separateley, where you both file separate returns). Please do not confuse Married Filing Separately status with Single status. They are two totally different categories with different sets of rules.

Only if you get got divorced by the end of 2006. You marital status as of 11:59:59pm Dec 31 is your marital status for tax purposes.

No, you cannot file single. Anyone who is married as of December 31st has two options to file: married filing jointly or married filing separately. Married filing jointly is the better option most of the time. You can calculate your taxes both ways to see which filing status is best for you two.

you can, but you are risking it, why would you want to file single? its better when you filel joint so that your income can be higher and it is also cheaper.
