He went to bed at 7.30 and slept till 9.15. Now he won't go back to sleep. He hasn't had a nap. I don't know what to do anymore. Have tried controlled crying, rapid return and lying in bed with him, and sitting on his floor. Please help.

Do you have a routine before bed time?

About 90 minues before bed time start slowing things down - turn off videos and tv (or very active and noisy videos)

Try to give food and then give a bath.

Try to add something like lavender/chamomile essential oils to the bath water - no more than 3 drops in the bath for a toddler as there are side effects.

Give the baby a drink of milk if he will take it.

After the child is in nightwear go into the bedroom and read a story while he is in bed.

When story is finished say goodnight and give him a kiss and go out of the room and turn off the light.

When he comes out of the room, say nothing to him and give no eye contact, but put him right back to bed. You may have to do this 30 times the first night. If you are consistent and keep to the routine every night he will settle. Try and start the routine at the same time EVERY day.

If you have someone at home to help you they should also do the bedtime routine. The person who puts your little boy to bed should do the returning if he doesn't settle.

Hope this helps.

2 is a funny age. Every one of us has a clock that tells us when we need things. My son's clock changed around age 2 as well. Babies need tons more sleep for cognitive development. But, they wake up every couple of hours or so to eat right. By 2, most motor functions are intact and they don't sleep as much. Your son's clock is readjusting to not needing as much sleep and less frequent meals. Even though at this point you may not believe it, naps are important. If naps are still a part of your schedule, make sure that they are early. I had to let my son nap from 1 to 3. Also, put him to bed a little later. Most kids have a short sleep and a long sleep. Even in the long sleep, my son only slept 4 or 5 hours. You just have to make sure the long sleep is at night. Try skipping naps for 2 or 3 days. This will reset where you choose to put his long sleep. I hope that this helps.

Try stimulation and activities durring the day. Try buying a toy that will make him work to manipulate it. Walks where he can walk and explore. Fresh air is good for sleep too. My third child is 2 right now. I feel your frusteration.

my 2 yr old girl goes through stages where she wont nap, but a lot of the time it is because they are over tired, doesnt make sense, but they will be really cranky, and obviously tired but for some reason they wont sleep, you are going to have to ride it out....the joys of parenting a 2 year old....the calmer you keep him the more easily he will be able to calm his mind and relax enough to go to sleep :) hope this helps....I will play music for my girl and rock her and it helps :)

There is a book called your child's sleep problems which gives you a lot of advise, your child might not be an easy to raise kid, he might be ADD or not a mellow personality, singing, might soothe him, I would take him to the doctor if he does not sleep,
also bathing him before going to be relaxes him.
