I don't think you would like sick if you were any slimmer. You could down as far as 130 and look fine. 170 still seems heavy.

Okay, so you're looking to lose 50 lbs or so. First of all if you became a vegitarian for weight loss, then i would start eating meat again. You need to eat 5-6 small meals a day, drink only water and get on a treadmill for 45-60 minutes 5-6 days per week. You should have between 1500 and 1700 calories per day for weight loss, any less and your metabolism could slow down.

First let me say that i am also 5'7" & used to weigh 228 i am now 175, i achieved my weight loss with the L.A Weight loss program, which basically consist of them teaching you the right way too eat, making sure that you have the proper servings of fruits, veggies, starch, proteins, fat & dairy you still eat & prepare you own food & you can eat select dishes from restaurant .L.A Weight Loss is expensive but when i look in the mirror i know it was worth it. You can find the same info that the offer by doing a lil research on the web or in your local libarary . As far as exercise i did not do any when i was on the program , but i did join a gym once i reached my goal weight to tone certain areas.......I hope this helps and good luck with your weight loss....take it one day at a time.

I am 5'7 also and i used to struggle with my weight. I used to be 180 pounds and my doctor told me that I could lose 20 pounds and still be within the healthy weight range...so i did. I didn't focus much on dieting, but rather on eating better. Changing my eating habits was much easier for me, because I was still able to eat what I wanted but only in smaller portions. If you diet, and lose the weight you want, the chances of it coming back are pretty high. That's why you should try to aim on eating better. Its going to be tough, but SO worth it in the end! You should also try walking; it can be more effective than running.
Don't burn yourself out and remember that losing weight takes time! GOOD LUCK!

THATS THE WHOLE POINT!! you have to have protein to lose weight and proteins in meat ya got to eat it and also you've always probably took that many steps per day anyways so what ya do is buy a exercise bike, plant it infront of the t.v. eat carrots when ur hungry have a large break fast that consists of eggs toast some kind of fruit milk and low fat butter(skim milk) then a small lunch and smaller super if ur not eating breakfast that could be it, it actually makes u gain weight if u dont eat bf because you need the energy from it and if u dont get the energy ur body builds up the sugar and produces fat

Start keeping a food diary. I recently lost 65 pounds and for me a food diary is a must. Even though you have cut out snacks and have become a vegetarian you still may be taking in more calories than you realize. A food diary will help you see what your eating patterns are and where you might be getting into trouble. Be sure to increase your fiber and water intake and that may help as well.

I'm having the same problem - I'm 5'8 and about 240, my doctor also told me with my build, etc. not to shoot for anything below about 165-175. I'd LOVE to get down to that! We're investing in an elliptical machine within the next month or so and I'm hoping to start working on my calorie intake and all of that fun jazz.
While I don't have suggestions, I just wanted to say, you're not alone!
Here's a website I've been checking out to help with calorie intake and stuff.

My friend was trying different diets for the last 2-3 years and nothing worked. She finally decided to try Jenny Craig. After one month she has lost 8 lbs so far. But, she is also going to the gym pretty much every day. It seems like the simple equation of eating less + buring more calories thru exercise always works... you just need to find the right avenue to make it a success. Try various ones until you find the right one for you.

Are you a guy or girl? Your doctor is wrong. Even if you are a guy, you should weigh no more than 165 at your height.
Just remember.....being a vegetarian doesn't mean you will lose weight. Vegetarians can gain weight, too. So you have to watch your diet very carefully. Are you eating too much cheese or too much protein? Too much rice, pasta and potatoes? Watch your portions, too. Got to eat less and exercise MORE.

you need to watch the calories you're taking in - it's the ratio of what you put in to what you burn off... Also, being a vegetarian doesn't mean you'll be slim or lose weight - I know plenty who are big... if you're under doctors supervision he/she should have a weight lose and exercise regime that should work for you... Whatever you do don't give up! you may have reached a plateau which happens to the best of us. good luck
