I am going to Paris next week and staying at the Hotel Royal Opera, to book my reservation I had to use my mums Visa cos I don't own one. The hotel asks for the full payment to be made at the end of our stay, would they accept cash or would I have to use the Visa that I made to confirm my reservation?

You only need a credit card to hold that particular room. That way if you don't show up, they don't lose any money- they just charge the card. But you can pay cash at the end of your stay.

Credit cards are a standard for holding a reservation. This protects the hotel in the case of a guest not cancelling so the room can still be sold. It also protects the guest by guaranteeing payment to the hotel when you request a late arrival. Also, I am pretty sure that as long as that credit card is the guarantee on your reservation, all charges going to that reservation daily will be held against that credit card until cash is paid at checkout time. This might or might not cause a problem for your mom.

In Europe , most hotel reseverations are not pre-paid. They just require the credit card as security. In case of non payment at the end of the trip, they can charge the credit card.
You can pay by cash or any other credit card that they accept for the actual payment at the end of your trip.
You might have to show your passport if you are paying cash.
If you have made reservations thru a travel agent or a third party website, do call the hotel and confirm your resevervation if possible.

Call them. I can't think of any business that doesn't take cash for payment. The visa is to reserve your room, only when you check out will they charge. That is how it is done in the U.S. Again, I think you should call them to see if they expect payment from Visa or if you can pay cash.

Have fun in Paris. Au revoir.

You will be fine paying cash.

Taking a booking via Visa just ensures you have that room. Also, if you do not turn up, then then hotel have a way of recouping some money from you for not cancelling in time.

Hope this makes sense.

clearly you can't use the visa unless you bring your mum along to make the payment. if you don't own a credit or debit card you will have to pay cash

You can pay with either, but if you are not planning on using local currency - IE you have been using traveler's checks, you may not get the best exchange rate.

The Visa card will give you the best exchange rate.

Cash will be fine. The card is only used to hold the room in case you do not turn up.

You should be able to pay in cash, i did the same for my parents once.
I paid there deposit on my card then they paid the balance in cash.
Why not call or email to confirm it with them.
