I could give you my opinion, but in the end that is what it will remain, my opinion. As a protestant Christian I believe that the answer to this question has already been given in the Holy Bible. The first thing we must define is the soul. What is the soul? The Soul is a living person. Biblically a soul is made up of two things. Remember when God made Adam? Dust (from the ground) + Breath (from God). Therefore Dust + Breath = Living Soul
Gen 2:7 "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul"
Again, biblically a soul is just a person Acts 27:37 "we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls" Also (Acts 7:14, Ex 1:1-5)
Therefore, a soul cannot exist BY ITSELF. You must have two things: A body + the breath of God. If you just have breath there is no soul. And if you just have a body there is no soul. Notice James 2:26 "the body without the spirit is dead" (spirit in the margin means breath)
In conclusion, to answer the question what happens to the soul when you die. The answer is that it doesn't go to heaven and it doesn't go to hell. When someone or a soul dies the process is reversed. The breath goes back to God who gave it, and the body goes back to the ground where it was taken from. Biblically speaking Ecc 12:7 "Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it." And that body will remain in the ground until Jesus returns the second time, but that is another topic. That is the answer anything outside of the Bible answer is spectulation, human reasoning, and philosophy. There is much more that I have left out. Six feet under the ground, buried.
The Bible shows that the soul is not something inside a person; the soul is the very person himself. For example, when God created Adam, “the man came to be a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7) Adam was not given a soul; he was a soul, a complete person.
Consequently, we read that souls are born. (Genesis 46:18) They can eat or fast. (Leviticus 7:20; Psalm 35:13) They weep and faint away. (Jeremiah 13:17; Jonah 2:7) Souls can be kidnapped, pursued, and put in irons. (Deuteronomy 24:7; Psalm 7:5; 105:18) Some Bibles render the original-language word as “soul” in those verses, while others use the words “being,” “creature,” or “person.” All mean the same thing.
Since the soul is the person, when a person dies, the soul dies. Ezekiel 18:4 says: “The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.” Also, Acts 3:23 says: “Any soul [or, person] that does not listen to that Prophet will be completely destroyed from among the people.” So the soul is not something that survives the death of the body.
The spirit is not the same as the soul. In humans, the spirit is the life-force that enables them to perform the activities of life. The spirit is like electricity. Electricity can run a fan or a refrigerator but cannot by itself move the air or make things cold. In the same way, our spirit enables us to see, hear, and think. But the spirit itself can do none of those things without the eyes, ears, or brain. That is why the Bible says of man: “His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts do perish.”—Psalm 146:4.
According to the Bible, therefore, neither the soul nor the spirit leaves the body at death to continue life in the spirit realm.

First of all, everyone thinks that a soul is a being that goes on living forever. Nope, that's a pagan concept that was christianized by Constantine. A soul is a living PERSON, hence phrases like "not a soul around." Formula for a soul: a body plus the breath of life. When a person dies, the life goes out of him, and God reclaims it. The body just dies. Then you wait for the ressurection. You don't go to heaven or hell when you die, you go after the end of world, at the judgement.

Well i sort of agree withh Gazelle K or whoever but I believe that if you read the Bible then then answer becomes clear. We do have a soul and we were created by God. You have a choice on this earth, you can choose to accept Jesus as your savior (because he died on the cross for YOUR sins and MINE). If you do then the Bible clearly states that you will be in Heaven with the Lord Jesus Christ and God for the rest of eternity. What we will do in Heaven i do not know but I believe that we will be worshiping God the Father for all eternity, that is all that we will want to do because of his love for us. If you reject Jesus then the Bible is clear that you will be condemed to the Lake of Fire, or Hell, for all eternity. It may seem harsh, but all Jesus requires is that you put your trust in him and what he HAS done for YOU on the cross. John 3:16 says "For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotton son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life". He is a holy God and He is love but he has a perfect standard, which none of us live up to. We are all siners, even Christians. But the reason I know that I have eternal life is because of my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible has plenty of other verses that support these statements and the Bible does not contradict itself at ALL unlike other "holy books". To me it is crystal clear what happens to us after we die. I hope this is helpful.

4 Look! All the souls—to me they belong. As the soul of the father so likewise the soul of the son—to me they belong. The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.

The bible says it returns to the ground. Or turns back into dust.
The soul is you or your body. The bible says my soul is thristy, or tiried and even animals are spoken of as having souls.
It is the spirit that returns to the true god who gave it.
That old body becomes dust.
Also, says the soul that is sinning dies. So the soul can die.

Souls don't exist and never have existed. In ALL history, there has NEVER been ANY evidence to even suggest that souls exist.

You will be before God with all the others who have lived upon the earth.
He is hoping that you will take Him up on His offer to be cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ and be able to share a joyful eternity with Him.

it depends on what you believe in. Christians and Catholics and others who believe in the god of Israel believe they will go to heaven or hell. i don't. i can't go somewhere that i don't even believe exists. i believe i will be able to stay and watch over my family if i wish or move on to my next life. one day after I've learned all my lessons on life i will be reunited with the divine. BASICALLY there is no proof of where you go, you just believe in something and find out if you were right or wrong after you die. good luck ~*~Blessed Be~*~
