i had to walk 10+ miles to get home the other day, & no surprise my feet (and legs) didn't feel so good afterwards. thing is, later that day the inside of my ankle/foot above the arch was bruised looking & VERY swollen, warm, and painful. i also got a bruise on the outer top of my foot. it's still like this. i can barely walk, standing is uncomfortable, and the only thing that doesn't hurt it is if i keep it totally still w/nothing touching it. it feels like there's a bunch of nails jambed in my foot. what could be wrong? what can i do to make it feel better?

Sounds like you have sprained your arch. Wrap your foot and stay off of it for a while (crutches).

You're experiencing foot cramps and swelling. It happens when you do a lot of standing, walking or running when you're not used to it. I get it every time I hike Half Dome in Yosemite (a 17 mile rigorous hike). The bruising is from the blood pooling in your feet. That's not abnormal.

What I do is soak my feet in warm (not hot) water with a 1/2 cup of epsom salts. You can get this at any drug store or Target. Soak for about 15 - 20 minutes. Pat dry. This alone will alleviate some of the pain. Then lay down and elevate your feet about 8 - 12 inches for 20 - 30 minutes. It helps to elevate them from the knees, rather than just putting something under your feet, which can put stress on your ankles and exacerbate the condition. Use a cool compress on the tops of your feet and ankles. Even doing this only once will take much of the pain and swelling out of your feet. But you'll probably have to repeat this process a couple times. Do it twice a day, if you can. And do it for as many days as necessary. You should be feeling much better after 2 days.

Good luck!

Try icing it.
You can make a bag of ice and try putting it on for 15 minutes and the leave it off for 15 minutes. Repeat this two or three times.

Ice is good for just about any pain, as it simply drives blood from the area being iced. It would have been good for the ice to be put on right away, but it sounds like you'll still get something out of doing this.

Though, I have to say, you shouldn't get bruised from walking - what kind of shoes were you wearing?

You apparently had some shoe problems and allowed a mal positioning of one of the joints in the foot.. This could be sufficient enough to reveal bruising above the joint.. You may find some relief by rolling your foot over a tennis ball or a bottle.. Sufficient enough to allow the joint to return to its normal position.

Try an ice pack to get the swelling down.Keep it elevated to reduce pain. You should be fine in a day or two.
