I am going to be having breast implant surgery this month, and I am curious as to what is the proper way to address it at the office. I work for a small company (11 people) and it's fairly close-knit. Obviously, it will be noticable once I have the implants- (although I am getting small-ish ones, so not TOO noticable) so should I be honest with everyone? If not, what do I tell everyone when I take time off to 'have surgery'? Do I just tell them I'm having a small operation, and nothing more? I'm not embarassed or uncomfortable with talking about it, but I just want to be sure it's done in an appropriate way. HELP! Oh, and Happy New Year! :)

Wow! Thanks so much everybody! With the exception of Justina and her attempt at pseudo-psychiatric advice, everyone had really great opinions. You all confirmed what I pretty much already thought, which was nice! I couldn't even choose a best answer they were all so good. Thanks a million!

girl, you're beautiful the way you are. dont do it for anyone else, and don't even do it for yourself. you'll regret it when the stuff they fill it with goes leaking through your blood system. you need to work on the inside first before you start messing with the outside.

Tell your boss/supervisor that you are taking sick leave for an elective surgery - telling your coworkers is optional.

To stay on the polite side of office etiquette, do not describe anything more about the surgery unless asked. If someone asks what type of surgery you are getting, and you don't mind telling, simply say "silicone implants." Avoid mentioning the words "boobs" or "breasts", as this might make someone uncomfortable and lead to a sexually-charged work environment or be considered a form of sexual harassment. If possible, save the discussion for a non-working setting or time, such as lunch.

Also, be clear now about what sort of feedback is acceptable to you after the surgery - let your coworkers know if it's okay to look at your new curves but not okay to ask to touch them or stare at them.

The office etiquette is that it isn't anyone's business if you're having surgery or what you're having done. If you feel that your small breasts are a problem, then if someone asks, you could tell them that you had a problem that needed to be addressed. That wouldn't be a lie.

Since it's sexual harassment to ask you about your new chest, people will still know, but they aren't likely to question you about it.

it's none of their business. I don't care HOW SMALL the office is. tell them (if you must) you're going on vacation. If someone notices tell them you learned some new exercises to build them up. OR you could just tell them that the clothes you were wearing were more baggy and these new ones are tighter and more revealing. "I thought a new wardrobe would enhance my appearance, what do you think?"

I agree with everybody, it's no body's business but yours~All you have to say is I will be out of the office for a minor surgery. If more questions to be ask, it's personal situation.

I am really not sure. I work in a small office and my boss the owner is having it done and we are thinking of having a party for her the day before she goes in for it. we all talk about everything

I see no reason to tell the others, even if it is fairly close-knit. Sometimes its better to keep things close to the chest -- oops, pun intended --he he. Some things are just not anyone else's business.

Good luck!

Probably let only your closest co-workers know, but outside of the office. Some of them wil end up telling others and pretty soon they'll all know, officially and non-officially

There's no need to explain yourself to anyone. They'll (OO) explain it for you upon your return:) Good luck with the surgery.

You don't have to tell anyone anything unless you want to.
