Sometimes I tell my 19mo son he is being a poo-poo head but its all in fun. I think some parents get angry and don't calm down before punishing their kids. They don't think about their words having consequences. I once said something mean to my daughter so I caould get some kind of reaction or emotion from her and it hurt like hell when I saw how it hurt her and vowed that I would never let it happen again. Not everyone is gonna admit it but most parents even if its just once say or will say something to their kids that they regret. The thing is to not let it happen more than once. You just need to make sure that you break the cycle and don't let the same happen with your kids. Take Care honey.

No i havent ever spoken to my child in a harsh way (she is 3) when i get upset when she does something wrong i just calm down as best as i can and without yelling at her . For I have realized that yelling doesnt truly get a point across its all in how your deliver the explaination or punishment.
I was raised in a negative enviroment and this in its own way has thought me how not to be with my children. For i wouldnt want her to ever feel the way i used to when I was younger. Negativity toward your children only causes resentment.
I am sorry that your parents were like that too you. Use their attitudes as a floor plan in your life of how you dont want too be.

You know what? I had that growing up. But instead of making my own daughter feel like crap, I learned from my childhood of verbal hell. I have always, always tried to treat her with the respect that she deserves. You are what you hear as a kid. Such a vulnerable time in a life. So even if you're having to endure this now, later down your road you can turn it around and use your experiences to help someone else. And, by the way, you ARE special. Believe it.

Mine did, but I will never do that to my son. You're supposed to make your kids feel loved and safe, instead, I was afraid to come home from school a lot of the time. I've learned from my parents mistakes (whom I have a good relationship with now so that my son can be close to them) and will be a better parent because of it.

I've never said anything 'mean' to my son. He may say little things about how I never let him have any fun (after asking to go swimming in the backyard in the winter?!?! what is he nuts? lol )
But I think I know what you're talking about. I wasn't brought up being told mean things or being put down. I wouldn't ever put my son in that position either.
Not all parents belittle their children.

I think all parents, at one time or another, say something unkind to their kids. Especially if they did something stupid - like jumping off the roof of a garage or peeing in a glass instead of going to the bathroom. But to constantly put down your kids destroys their ability to have a positive outlook on themselves.

no, they are not like that. it is wrong to say bad things to your own child. if your parents are being mean to you, tell another adult right away, someone you trust and you lknow they like you and care about you.it will only make life hard for you. trust me i know. please tell someone. you wont be getting you parents in trouble that trusting adult will help you and then you parents will not be mean anymore. i dont know you but you are a good child.

I had the same thing when I was growing up, but instead of calling my kids names I say stuff like "You are acting like a spoiled brat" or "Dont act like your retarded Aunt Katherine" stuff like that....I dont flat out call them names :) and buy they way their aunt is 16 and acts worse than my 5 year old :)~
