If you have a specific dog in mind go to the library and look at the books they have on that breed. You may change your mind about the breed once you've read about it and have seen some of the other books.
Don't get a dog that needs to be groomed every 6 to 8 weeks, stay away from long haired breeds
You can also check your local pound, humane societies, rescue places. If you are unsure as to what you want this is the best way to go. You will see dogs from all walks of life, it may not be a pure breed but it will love you. Ask about temperament.
If you are looking for a puppy think about cost and training, and chewing and the times it takes train him. All the shots, spaying or neutering etc. When you adopt a dog it has usually already been spayed/neutere, has all of it's shot, been seen by a Vet or Vet tech and should carry a clean bill of health. You can adopt for less than $100.00.

Some of the best breeds are Labs, either yellow or black. Also dachshunds and German shepherds.
Try finding a working dog because they tend to pay more attention. Such as all the sheperds and the retreivers. Retreivers are a bit more athletic and jumpy.
I love poodles they are very smart and loyal, but they need a lot of time and grooming.
You have to keep in mind that any dog will take about a year and a half to grow up, or become more mature. So, for that time they wil behave like children, and play too much and run too much, and tear up things, etc.

Ok, I have to tell you... you can't predict a dogs personality, habits or actions based on breed or looks before you get it. A dog can become everything you want it to be as long as YOU have the knowledge required to train the dog. Any dog can get into stuff if it is bored and any dog can have the bad habit of bringing stuff inside to chew or leave laying around. Highly athletic dogs are at increased risk for unwanted behaviour because they can often get bored if the owner does not occupy their time and energy. All that being said I suggest you go to a local animal shelter and ask the shelter workers if they have an adult dog that is already fairly trained and has an established personality similar to what you describe.... other than that any breed/mix/mutt puppy that you get will turn out exactly the way YOU train it to be.

Any rescued dog will do then. The requirement about listening to you will be based on YOU properly teaching it, not the dog. Dogs that are more likely to be tuned in to working with you are dogs that were bred to work for people in partnership such as retrievers or herding dogs. Dogs that were bred to be 'independent' are dogs that were bred to ignore outside influences and do their jobs without humans (terriers, hounds). This does not make any dog 'right' for everyone, simply depends on what your goals are.
A mixed breed dog from a rescue/shelter situation will often be eager to please. Go to obedience classes and learn how to be a good teacher to your dog and you'll get much further with them.

Boston Terrier--not too small, not too big, loves being active, very smart, learn very fast, good with other people, animals, and children. Nice compact dog with the big dog voice--no yippy voice. Good for smaller spaces, but does need to have excellent one on one time and exercise. Good luck choosing. Also, remember that you train the dog to be what you want. So if you are a good human to your dog they will be a good dog to their human.

Go to your local animal shelter and try to find a Shepherd cross or Lab cross. Both will be smart and loyal and are likely to be good with everyone in the house. Rescued dogs are best, as they KNOW somehow you've busted them out of death row and will love you for it forever. Enjoy!!

Get a Cairn Terrier. They are intelligent, loyal, friendly, and perky. They make great house pets, so you don't have to make it live outside. They usually are c. 24 centimeters tall, and they live for 12 to 15 years. Hope this helps!

I got a Minature Schnauzer mix! They are awesome with kids and if your other dog is old, it might be a little rough. Min Schnauzer mixes can be big or small, depending on whatever breed the perents were. I hope this helps!

i think that you should first go to a shelter and see what they have. One of the people working at the shelter can probably recomend a dog for you!
Good Luck!
