Boxer's are the greatest guard dogs and are very playful animals, especially with children. I have one boxer and he is very protective of our house and the family. He likes to protect his territory at all times and he isn't rough with children.
I use to live across the street of an elementary school for like 9 years and my boxer would always play with the kids and he has never let strangers go by the house or in the house.
So go get yourself a boxer!

Boxers are natural guard dogs and most will look after the family home and property. Some Boxers take this to the extreme and may guard too well for your liking, while others seem to have missed out on any guarding instinct. However, the Boxer should never be purchased as a guard dog - this is only a tiny part of their great character, and it does not suit them at all. 'True' guard dogs require extensive, expensive training to perform, and only those with absolutely sound temperaments can do this work. No layman is able to tell if a dog is suitable or not without professional help.
Boxers are great with kids. Some guard more than others.

We have three boxers and wouldn't want any other breed except a boxer around our children. As far as a guard dog, they have never failed in letting us know when someone is nearing our home. They defend their territory very well when someone jumps the fence or has come in uninvited into our house. We even had the meterman refuse to read our meter because of our boxers. They do not let anyone in! We leave our female mama dog with our kids at night. If anything is wrong, she wakes me up and starts whining. Even when the kids get sick. I can't say enough good things about this breed. They are great!

The Boxer is happy, high-spirited, playful, curious and energetic. Highly intelligent, eager and quick to learn, but can be stubborn and sneaky. The Boxer is a good dog for competitive obedience. Constantly on the move, bonding very closely with the family. Loyal and affectionate, Boxers are known for the way they get along so well with children. A well brought-up and properly socialized Boxer will also get along with his own kind and other household pets. However one Boxer owner reported; their Boxer is best friends with their many barn cats and second dog, but will chase and eat their ducks and other farm birds. The female boxer will often get into fights with other female dogs, trying to display her dominance. If one owns a female boxer and another female dog, they will get along and even play most of the time, however they will most likely fight from time to time. It has been said that the name Boxer came from the way the Boxer likes to use is front paws for just about everything. If you have ever watched a Boxer go about his business you may have noticed the way he paws at his toys, food bowl and you for that matter, in a very playful cat-like way. Some Boxers have been known to paw at their food or water bowl if they are empty. Playfully barking, pawing and playing with the bowl, flipping it upside-down and putting their front paws on the top of the bowl, sliding it around the house barking and whining until someone fills it for them. It looks like a silly game, but the Boxer knows what he is trying to tell you, he's hungry! While participating the sport of schutzhund, Boxers are known to jump up and use their front paws as if they are boxing. They are very clownish and playful and have been known to grab and carry ANYTHING around including your knickknacks if he thinks he can get away with it. The Boxer's nature is to protect you, your family, and your home. Known visitors will be welcomed boisterously. They are always keen to work and play. Boxers need lots of human companionship. They can be rather boisterous and even in old age are still extremely athletic. Teach the Boxer not to be boisterous and especially not to jump up at people. Boxers LOVE to jump. This breed is noted for courage and makes great guard dogs. Boxers have a wide use in military and police work. Training should start young and be firm and consistent. This breed requires a dominant owner. An excellent watchdog, the Boxer will restrain an intruder in the same way a Bulldog does.

Almost any dog will be protective of your house and family. I would suggest going to a shelter and adopting one. A large breed dog would do best, because the bark will scare people off before they even see the pooch. I would also recommend a rescue if you have to have a purebred. Take your daughter with you, ask the shelter the personality of the dog and go with it. I would not train your dog to be a guard dog or try. This is why dogs are aggressive and get put ot sleep for 'out of the blue' biting someone. Like I said, almost any dog (not breed specific) will be protective of his territory and pack.

Labradors wont protect your home in the typical way they will essentially bark and alert you of any danger.Very few select well bred dogs have the temperment to protect your home. yes there are many trainers who will train your dog to be a guard dog but that costs a small fortune (about 2k and up) and the dog needs to cooperate with the trainer. 9 out of 10 times all you will need to deter an intruder is agressive barking but in those rare cases he will charge your dog.without training he will over power your dog then do whatever he'd like to.I grew up with both of these dogs shepherds and labs just for protection i would get the shepherd it seems a lot more intimidating to an uneducated intruder. I hope whatever choice you make you love your new pup ;)

If you want a good guard dog, get a Rottweiler.
They are great with kids and other dogs.
One of the best things about this breed is that many people will back off just by looking at the dog.
I had one that was so sweet and wonderful in every way. No one messed with my property when I put him on the job. He was also easy to take care of.

Guard dogs are:
Akita Inu
Rottweiller
German Shepherd
Doberman
I can honestly say that boxer dogs do not make great guard dogs. Just look into the breed and you will find this to be true.
