Is it a bad idea to take a water bottle in a restroom? I have a bottle with the cap that pushes on the top, but I mostly unscrew the cap to drink anyway. I have been taking my water bottle in the restroom for over 2 yrs...but I am starting to think the exposure to restroom bacteria is entering the bottle. I also tend to go to the restroom a lot in skool. So two questions: is using a water bottle after taking it into a high school bathroom causing exposure to bacteria, and is this in turn giving me stomach problems?

Probably not. Bacteria can't float around in the air and land of things. If you are not filling your bottle with the bathroom faucet, setting in on the floor of the bathroom, etc. You are pretty safe.

As far as stomach problems what are you experiencing? Stress can cause severe stomach upset but so can so many other things.

I suppose there is a slim chance that you have picked up a bug by handling your waterbottle after using the facility and then drinking from the place where your hand touched. But that is slim. I would be more concerned about the plastic that the bottle is made of (unless you are using a glass bottle?) "Nalgene bottles, made of polycarbonate (#7) or "Lexan," are more closely linked to bad stuff, specifically an ingredient called bisphenol-A (BPA). BPA is an endocrine disruptor that mimics estrogen and has been linked to aneuploidy, adipogenesis, and other scary problems with funny names. Drinking water or eating food containing leached BPA may cause chromosomal disruption, miscarriages, birth defects, or obesity."

You shouldn't use the same water bottle for more then a couple days. If you have been using the same one for two years then throw it out!!!! Maybe it could be getting bacteria in it. Who knows. Just put it in your back pack before you go to the bathroom and only fill it up with water fountains.

You need to get rid of the water bottle. Germs and bacteria can grow inside a bottle that is used and reused. Sterilize the bottle every time you use it, before you fill it up and that should keep most if not all the germs at bay.

The bathroom doesn't give you health problems. A water bottle can't absorb diseases and bathrooms aren't causing your problems, otherwise you would always be sick since you are in the bathroom often.

High schools are disgusting... and the bathrooms are rarely cleaned. I wouldn't doubt you are getting the stomach pains from the bathroom sinks.

As long as you are not dropping it in the toilet or having it touch some germy things you should be fine.
