You can try the (free) Windows Movie Maker software that's included with Windows XP. If it's not already installed on your computer, you can download it from here:

Dont spend money on anything else, just use windows movie maker (start-all programs or sometimes under accessories). I have a canon powershot as well, and it records in a weird type of avi, so only windows movie maker recognizes it. Once you plug in your camera, click on the clips, and windows will automatically import them into my pictures (because its a digital camera). Then you can open up movie maker, click on import video clips, and then click on my pictures, and it should be there. The editing process is pretty straightfoward and self explanatory, so i wont explain it, its really simple. Just keep your videos within ten minutes, or if they are longer, cut them into two pieces, and make two projects. Youtube has a 10minute limit now. After your done, export your movie. Depending on what size you shot on the camera, export as 320x240 or 640x480. Just pick whichever one you used when shooting your video. Youtube's limit is 640x480, so if you shot in that, pick that. The easiest way is to just let the computer pick for you, however, when exporting, click on save to computer instead of save to internet. This way, you will have high quality video, and youtube can still play it. Hope this helps!
