Why people who proclaim to be christian react so violent when they are confronted with the truth. I mean I do not think that religion has done anything good for humanity. You can see it in any history book. For example, when Adolf Hitler took over Germany, Christendom supported him and the Pope said that Hitler was a manifestation of the kingdom of God. What about all those killings that took place all over the Americas when the conquerors wipe out the Native Americans in the name of the church? What about the cruzades? What about the inquisition? For those of you who are open minded, I recoment the book, the forbidden book of christianity by Jacopo Fo. Also there is a lot of evidence that the catholic church supported hitler, you can see it in the book HOLOCAUST CHRONICLES

Dallas you are saying that what I wrote is just crap. But my comments are based on historical evidence. I respect everyone's right to believe in what they want, but I think that for the most part religion is a big business. Getting rich of people's ignorance

The Pope did not did anything to stop the Holocaust. As simple as that. And THE POPE BENEDICT WAS A NAZI. HE BELONGED TO HITLER'S YOUTH

NOT ONE CAN DENIED THAT RELIGION HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN POLITICS SINCE ANCIENT TIMES. IF JESUS SAID MY KINGDOM DOES NOT BELONG TO THIS WORLD, SO WHY THE CATHOLIC CHURCH SUPPORTS POLITICAL LEADERS

If the world didn't argue over religion, they would argue over power and leadership, land, money, who rules the world etc etc.
Religion is just another excuse for evil minded b######ds.

The Catholic Church did not support the Holocaust
Pope Pius XII (1939-1958), as Secretary of State to Pius XI and as pope, faced Nazi Germany with a remarkable consistency. The Nazis considered him an implacable foe, and he was hailed both during and after World War II as the strongest voice – often the only voice – speaking out in Europe against the Nazi terror. The Church under his leadership is credited with saving more Jewish lives in the face of the Holocaust than any other agency, government or entity at the time. Pius’ combination of diplomatic pressure, careful but sustained criticism while maintaining an essential Vatican neutrality in war-torn Europe, as well as direct action through his nuncios and the local Church where possible, saved what some have estimated as 860,000 Jewish lives. If that estimate is accurate by only half, it remains a historic effort for a Church fighting without weapons against the most horrific campaign of genocide the world had yet seen.
Yet, in the face of this clear historical record, Pope Pius XII has come under attack since his death. Beginning with Rolf Hocchuth’s The Deputy in 1963, a revisionism set-in Pius five years after his death and a new picture of Pius was created. Accused of an alleged “silence” in the fact of the Holocaust, critics have gone further, insinuating that he may have been a crypto-Nazi sympathizer. In John Cornwell’s Hitler’s Pope he is portrayed as an anti-Semitic, silent bystander to the Holocaust.
God Bless You

Listen, you sound like a very smart and intelligent person. So let's just be honest. We ALL realize that it would be the worst idea in history to even think about a world without religion since we see what has happened just by attempts to remove religion from the schools. As for the rest of the so-called bad things that religion has done to humanity, well, come on, religion had nothing to do with all the stupidity demonstrated by those idiots. Furthermore, we have to be careful not to confuse religion with a personal relationship with God.

People should be spiritual in nature.religion is OK.But people are to dogmatic with there religions.if people woulds seek spiritual values and not those made up by men then religion would be OK.you should forgive. be tolerant. non judgmental.loving . kind.peaceful.But this world is controlled so much by the Prince of the power of the air.Its hard to differentiate sometimes for people between religious and spiritual ways.so Yes. It would be better if people would understand that religion is based on spiritual values. not worldly values. and they should understand the difference.but people are sheep and wont to be lead, but the Spirit of God is what should lead people not a church. Each person must pray and ask of the Spirit for guidance and learn to listen to that very quiet voice within which will answer there prayers and then try to do Gods will as best they can.Peace

My answer is a qualified YES. But first, I have this to say in defense of religion...
The amount of learning, rational thought and courage it takes to accept and affirm the world as it is...is such an enormous challenge that most people just aren't up to it. Yet, they need answers about the large questions of life. Religion supplies these, plus the "good news" that who you are will live forever, even beyond death.
Unfortunately, much of religions' answers are not true. Which means a person has to make a "leap of faith" to believe what they've been told. They also have to struggle every day to rationalize the difference between what they see happening in the real world with what their religion says about it. This disconnect, I believe isn't good for mental health.
Also, I believe what YOU are saying that religion is the primary cause for most of the world's grief. Not all, but most.
The world WOULD be better off without religion, but people will need a substitute set of answers that satisfy their needs. Science gives us the truth as best as it can be had...but raw truth doesn't satisfy most people. People need to be helped to make a "leap of acceptance." They need to learn how to appreciate the world as it is, the preciousness of our finite existence. To create meaning for their own lives, not wanting other people to tell them what the meaning is. And to wonder at the beauty of our universe. These are the miracles. But people need help with this.
So 2007 is not the time in Earth history for replacing religion. It's a time for beginning that process...your job is to start with yourself. Live a life of joy and meaning, and do it consciously, not by accident. Maybe someday, in a less primitive time...

although there are many religious organizations that claim their killings are in God's name, I believe that a world with out religion would be much worse. What keeps a lot of people from hurting others is religion, the fear of going to hell. Even though hell is a place made up by the church, it puts fear into people that there really is a consequence after this life of actions they do during this life. Either way you look at it, there will always be "good" and "bad" people doing what they do best, what they want to, and justifying their actions accordingly.

yes dear, the wold will be much better without any religion or there should be only one humanity through out the whole palnets, The God(unseen authority) never sent any one to creat the new religion. It is only to get the popularity, if you want to get the full knowledge of the truth then you must read the books of Guru Nanak Dev, who even moved the Macca(the Kabba) and if you could get time then please also read holy book "Bhagatwat Geet" that will let you know what is God and for what a man is meant.

Yes, I think the world would be a better place without religion. However, I can't be sure of that... because we've never seen it done yet.
But one thing is for sure. Religion has been the root cause of nearly every "evil" ever committed throughout history.
I'd like to see secularism given a chance. If it fails, no harm, no foul. But I'd like to see it given a chance.
Edit - To Aztec down below... seeing as how god doesn't exist, (and even you must admit, even if YOUR god does, then the majority of the world's gods DO NOT)... then we already are operating under moral relativism.
The majority of the world does not get their morality from the same god you do. Where then, do you presume that they get it?
And... what do you think they would answer... in response to you?

Not necessarily. For many people, faith, gives them hope and strength to succeed and pull themselves out of deep depressions, recover from serious illnesses and defeat addiction. It also help many people follow the moral high ground and help people and animals through charitble works. I don't see how this is ever a bad thing.
It is only when it is blind faith and closed-mindedness that it becomes dangerous. If everyone, regardless of which religion, was tolerant and accepting of different religions and different people, this world would be a better place.

No, no faith means no guidenance. You need some tool to guide the majority like a farmer guides a flock of sheep in the field. Religion calms people down, reduces crime in a local population. Furthermore, religion is power; sometimes it is more powerful than the government. Think back to how powerful were the crusades upon Jerusalem. Like my good friend once said; religion is the opium for the people.

yah sure today's world would be better without religion for the most part. religion HAS done something good - when it was created it was basically a morale booster and nothing more. for a lot of people today it still is. i have family that consider themselves Christians or whatnot, consciously KNOW that it's all BS but still practice because it helps them do better inlife. i say power to ya then. but yah war would be gone for the most part if it werent for religion
