Can we have answers directly referring to the NKT please, not generally on what a cult is or what religion is. If you don't know anything about the NKT specifically, please do not answer. Thanks.

1. I would say not. Usually a cult has a lot or all of the following characteristics:
a) a charismatic leader
b) a leader whose great wealth derives from the religious movement
c) an aggressive recruitment campaign
d) mentoring of new recruits
e) enforced isolation of recruit from the rest of the family
f) mind control techniques
g) hostility to the media
h) transfer of large proportions of personal wealth to the religious movement
i) hostility towards ex-members
I don't think NKT is quite like that, although there are controversies about the way this new Buddhist tradition was started, and the role of the leader.

2. If you are at all unsure (for yourself or for someone you know), then there is always the Kadampa Buddhism of The Heruka Centre in Golders Green, London NW11.

A religion is simply a cult with political power

One man's cult is another man's salvation. Beware of religions with an oxymoron in the name.
