Beer may be partly to blame for what are commonly called beer bellies, but it isn't the only culprit. Many men who never drink beer have a bulging gut. And some beer-lovers have those coveted "six-pack" abs. The real reason too many American men carry around beer bellies is that they consume too many calories and too much fat.

Alot of men get beer bellies from drinking too much beer. You don't have to drink beer to have a big gut. Being a big eater has lots to do with it. Alot of people are addicted to too much TV and won't exercise because most are too lazy. There are also lots of calories in beer.

Beer bellys are called such because it is thought that beer contains alot of calories, and so by drinking vast quantities of God's juice is causes a large fat tummy. Also, people who drink in vast quantities are seen as lazy, and consumption of fatty foods such as crisps, chips, and nuts (high in salt and fatty acids) are normally associated with beer drinkers. Afterall, when was the last time you saw someone swigging a guinness or Carling on the treadmill or lateral trainer....? It is a lack of tone in the abdominal muscles that causes this overhang, which often increases with age. Over the years… a combination of losing strength in your TVA (Transverse Abdominus) muscles and a gain of fat around your midsection leads to the appearance of a beer belly.

Also, there is a widespread myth that "beer bellies" are the result of a fatty or enlarged liver. While excessive consumption of any alcohol can lead to fatty liver and in the extreme fatal liver damage, this does not cause the fatty overhang typical of a beer belly.

Fear not, however you beer lovers; The primary energy-bearing constituents of beer are alcohol and carbohydrates; beer has no fat and very little protein. Light and low-alcohol beers carry less carbs and heavier beers carry less carbs per glass than sugared drinks. In fact it has been proven that non-drinkers adding a single serving of alcohol to their diet daily does not contribute to weight gain. Others have also found alcohol consumption to be unassociated with weight gain, for reasons not yet understood. However, a 40 U.S. fluid ounce (1.2 liter) bottle of Miller Genuine Draft, which might be consumed as a single serving by a heavy drinker, contains about 485 calories (2,030 kilojoules).
Studies have showna link between binge drinking and beer belly, so beware!

The most effective way of trimming down a beer belly is believed to be the same as for reducing fat in other areas of the body. This involves reducing caloric intake and/or increasing caloric expenditure through increased activity, such as aerobic exercise and strength training. Contrary to popular belief, working the abdominal muscles doesn't target the fat next to the muscle. If you attempt to reduce a "beer belly" by doing ab excercise, you will merely increase the muscle layer below the fat causing you to look fatter, so begin with cardiovascular exercises (those that get your heart pumping and all sweaty! gross but effective!!).
Once the weight is lost, the next job is to strengthen the TVA (Transverse abdominus) muscles that lay under the abdominal muscles. The TVA muscles make your belly flat when adequately strengthened.
For ab excercises email me as I have a great routine for beginners or regulars!!
