I think most people think of a barber as cutting men's hair, and a hairstylist as someone who mostly cuts and styles womens hair.

Great Question by the way.
A barber is not licensed to do chemical services.
They have a haircut standard and can give a man a shave.

A hairstylist better known as a cosmetologist is licensed to do both color and other chemical services.

A barber is best at mens haircutting.
A hairstylist is better at finding a style and products to reproduce the hair style you want.

Not just a standard picture.

If you want to have a style and products that both match you and your desired look you would want a hairstylist.

If you want the standard I would say a barber can do it and will try to get it to the way he knows best.

In some states the licenses are different however it's still not the same.

I am a woman barber, and I have learned all the requirments there are to being a barber which is shaving, and clipper work. I have also learned to color, perm and cut women's hair. I am considered a man's hairstylist, but also a barber. The only differnce I can see is, that ones that are so called stylists are ones that have gone to beaty school, and not barber school. But at barber school I learned most of the same things they do, except for updos and all that fancy stuff that women get. Plus they charge alot more that barbers do.Only barbers can use a straight razor for neck shaves and face shaves.

A Barber is a person who cuts men's hair, and trims and grooms beards as an occupation.
A Hairstylist is a person who cuts and styles people's hair professionally.

BOOYAH! Found it!

There is a difference between a barber and a cosmetologist. Barbers mainly cut hair of men and women, and shave the facial hair of men. The primary difference between the skills of a barber and cosmetologist, is the way they cut hair. Barbers utilize scissors and comb technique, along with electric clippers to cut hair. Cosmetologists use these tools also, but the primary difference is use of fingers on one hand to hold and stabilze the hair. Barbers are also allowed to use a straight razor to shave their clients, whereas a cosmetologist can only use a razor if it used for cutting hair.

Years ago men went to the barber and women went to a hairstylist. Now it doesn't matter what they call themselves as long as they can cut hair and don't overcharge.
