I'm in the RAF, and I know the rules for us, I believe it's the same for the Army.
Smoking inside the Barracks is not allowed, and the smoke detectors go off due to cigarette smoke. I've seen examples of people attatching socks to the fire alarms, but you can be charged (punished legally) for that.
Generally, there are designated smoking areas at work (smoker's room, or outside certain doors), but around the blocks, outside is fine, as long as the ends go in the bucket/ammo tin set aside for this.

At the moment there are designated smoking sheds around all camps.
i haven't heard anything regarding banning it as of july. it'll probably be down to each CO to decide about smoking on his camp.

Bloody ridiculous if its banned. You get shot at, spat upon, bombed and torpedoed, but you can't have a *** because its bad for your health!??!
I was a 'weekend warrior' (volunteer reservist) for 25 years and worked as a cook. The combat guys got real burgers (not Mc D*nalds style, but made with prime beef.real onion, egg, cumin, salt, pepper, and I got my field kitchen as close to the action as I could. I had to rig a camouflaged umbrella over my Karschner to keep clods of earth off. Fighters need protein, not salad!
(By the way, the training that British Forces chefs receive is superlative)
Were I a regular combat soldier, airman or sailor, I'd tell the civilian health fascists to sod off at once. Who is worried about lung cancer when the next bullet, bomb, missile, mine or torpedo could have your name on it?

There is some ideas that the forces make a man into a 'man'. So surely none of them want to smoke, if they've graduated to soldier status?
