Merlots are usually nice and mellow. My fave's Yalumba Y Merlot.

Some good suggestions already, just thought I would add another name to the list...

A bottle of Valpolicella could be worth a shot. Its an Italian wine that, in my opinion, is very easy to drink but doesn't cost the earth compared to wines like Chateaux Neuf de Pape. Anyway, its something a bit different and should suit most people's taste. Threshers have an own brand called Radcliffes that do a good Valpolicella.

Rioja's also have a reputation as being a good safe bet for red wines.

Depends on the party crowd. Is it a wine drinking crowd? Then a Brunello from Italy is a great one, or a Cab Franc (100% please) is great too. If it's a crowd that enjoys wine but isn't serious about it, then a Pinot Noir is great. It's light enough for the non-wine drinker, but good enough for the wine drinker to enjoy. Any Pinot Noir grapes from the Russian River Valley in California is absolutely great. Good luck!

A Merlot from Napa called Ridgeway Ridge or Hill or Crest or something like that is andexcellent buttery well-rounded Merlot wothout some of that wood stemy taste you get from some Merlots. It's about $20 to $25/bottle, but well worth the money.

Some of the Wilamette (sp?) Valley Pinot Noirs from Oregon are outstanding, very versatile and not too pricey. My favorite red is a Guenoc Cabernet Sauvignon from California.

Everyone has a different opinion on this. Just buy what you like. Or if you know what your hosts like, get that. Or if you know what's being served, pair it with that.

Anything under 5 Quid and a carrying a proof percentage above 11% is deemed a good wine in my book...

I used to run a bar and we sold Ernest & Julio Gallo-Ruby Cabernet. It sold really well, everybody who drank it raved how nice it was, can't stomach red wine myself so have to give you other peoples views, but for a small bar we sold more of that than almost anything else!

I found this wine called Yellow Tail here in the UK and when we went to America it was there too... I don't know what the grape variety is but it's very lovely.

Merlots are the best I think and they vary in age and price. Lets face it unless its dinner you don`t want to spend out too much eh.

But if you do they have a really nice pricey one that is sooo smooth.
