Hello recently my throat became irritated. i looked at it in the mirror to discover that my left tonsill had q-tip head sized crater with a white film filling it. I believe this is puss, but am not sure. i removed the film from the crater and it was not odoros. I have never had serious problems with my throat and i have a healthy immune system. I would like to have my tonssils removed only if its an absolute must. what would you reccomend?

Tonsils are only ever removed as a last resort. As for the white spot, if you do not have a sore throat or a fever, the spot is probably nothing more than a tonsillith. As we age, our tonsils develop craters or crevices (known as crypts). These openings get can fill up with saliva and food particles...in other words, a tonsilith. They are normal and nothing to worry about.

However, if you have a fever or a sore throat and are seeing white spots on your tonsils, you need to see a doctor immediately to be sure you do not have a strep throat. Never ignore a sore throat accompanied by a fever.

BTW, how on earth did you clean your tonsil with a q-tip! You must have a non-existant gag reflex!
