You should go with a Toyota Camry. These cars have a luxery design, but yet are under $25,000. They are very beautiful inside and out. They have good gas mileage, expecially for a V-6. And best of all, the Toyota has the reputation of running past 250,000 miles, and believe me, they aren't lying. I have a '96 Corolla, and it's still going strong at 146,000. They also have a very sturdy body frame. You will really feel safe on the road in one of these. You can't go wrong with a Toyota, even of you go with a slightly cheaper model like the Corolla.
All I can say is stay away from the Nissan Sentra, it's got great gas milage, but it has NO power, and you feel about as safe as riding in cardboard in it. Man, I wish I would have stuck with a Toyota that time around...lol.
Oh and btw, you might want to ask about thier "program cars," these will be SLIGHTLY used cars, the dealer himself drives it around and takes care of it so you know it's okay. They will be a new year, but with only maybe 15,000 miles on them, but will have a drastic reduction in price. This is great when you figure in depreciation. Because of depreciation, when you buy a new car, you wind up owing more than the car is worth for a LONG time, even from the moment you leave the car lot. It makes it really hard to trade in if you ever get tired of it before paying it off.
I hope this helps you. Good luck.

If you like an affordable European car, the Jetta or Passat. If you like the Japanese models, you can't go wrong with a Camry.
If you want to buy American, the Buick LeSabre is very reliable.
