I have two cats, but they make a real mess of the litter tray I have tried many different litter trays, any idea which liners to use and also any ideas of covering up the smell?

As for the smell:
I use scoopable litter called "Small Spaces." Also, I add baking soda to the litter every once in a while for the smell.

Also, you should have a minimum of one litter box per cat in the household and clean them daily.

As for the mess:
I recently found litter pans that look like rubbermaid containers. They're about 2 feet by 1 1/2 foot in size and they have a lid. They're very sturdy. The cats jump on them and enter the litter pan through a circular hole in the lid. The entire pan is about 1 1/2 foot deep. When the kitty finishes, it jumps back up through the hole, leaving most litter still in the pan.
I bought it at Petco or Petsmart.

I have tried several different litters and they all smell and are all messy. The only real differences, IMO, are the prices.
A covered litter box does help but what you really have to do is remove all wast from the box as many times a day as you can. I also keep a tiny hand broom and dust pan near by and sweep up the litter that falls out. It has to be done 2 times a day. I also spray with Lysol after every scooping. I use the kind that disinfects the air. I only have one cat that uses the box and I have to change the whole litter box once a week (or when ever it seems soiled). I have found the deeper the box the better. You can put in a lot of litter which encourages the cat to bury deeply, keeping down the smell.

When My Mother passed I inherited her 20 lb cat Garfield.

His is Gorgeous but a stinker (if you know what I mean.) But I solved 95% of the problem.

First I got a (approx.)24" by 24 " rubber maid type container with about 12 inch sides for a litter box and avoid tracking. Then I only used the TIDY CAT DRY CLUMPING LITTER. I would dump in the full bucket when I got it.

I had had the normal shallow pans (too much tracking) Then I had the automatic (what a mess,) soft BM embeds and drys in the combing bar. VERY NASTY. This deep box has worked the best.

We get the newspaper daily, so every morning the box was bailed. Sometimes morning and night. Stir the box after bailing perfectly. (My Husband hated the cat so I really worked to solve the problem.) Using the plastic newspaper bags.

One other thing that will solve most of the problem . NO CHEAP OR MOIST CAT FOOD . It makes for very NASTY smelling BM.

I also went to 1/3 of a cup a day of IAMS HAIRBALL MATURE CAT FOOD ONLY. This was because his is 16 now. Measured portions hold down the amount of BM they can produce.

Occasionally I would get him some of the snacks which he loved but back came the nasty smell and diarrhea Covering up the smell is NOT the solution. Eliminating it is the solution.

Good Luck and Happy New Year to you and your Kitty Family.

We have only one cat that would make such a big mess with scratching and covering until I bought a plastic dish pan by Rubbermaid. It is deeper then a regular litter box and he just can't make as much of a mess. I keep a garbage bag under it and change the litter 2 times a week and use baking soda to help with the odor. He is fixed and an inside cat but boy can he stink up the kids bathroom!! I also wash the box out when I change the litter with ammonia .

Try using baking soda to cover up the smell and use scoopable cat litter. I always clean out my cats litter box once a day. Also to keep the box cleaner, instead of having to bleach it out once a month, use a liner, I usually have to tape the sides of it to the litter box to make sure it stays. Clean out all litter once a week and put a new liner and litter in.

The mess - don't know. We have a "litter maid" that scoops up the poop & pee so there's a bit less mess but when Oreo jumps out of the litterbox, he gets in on the floor.

Litter has stuff in it to help. We also have a "Living Air Classic Air Purifier." It really helps. Even gets rid of brocalli & fish smells.

theres not really a way to cover up the smell a good idea would be to put the litter in a room where your hardly ever are like my cats litter box is in the basement cause we are barly ever there

a larger box with a lid and a door will help keep the litter from flying all over the room
place a mat outside the door to keep any litter from staying through your home
and the odor is pretty hard to cover up. you might want to try a small area air purifier.

Well I have two cats, -baking soda helps, you really need to clean the box a lot, I use the more fine sand becouse it absorbs the urine more, and ive thought about getting another box too, you might wont to get one of those cat boxes that has the sides like a kitty taxi, it will keep the sand some what inside , good luck
