Oppa means older brother and Unni means older sister. This is not the only use of these though. Unni is also what a girl calls a "friend" who is older than her. Although "friend" may be stretching it since Korean technically can only have friends the same age. Oppa is also used only by girls and can refer to a boy who is older than her who is a friend. The other meaning for Oppa though depends on intonation. If a girl says it to a boy in a particular intonation it also has a similar meaning to "lover" or boyfriend.

Oppa is older brother but only a girl says oppa but if a boy had a older brother it would be hyung
Unnie is older sister but only a girl say's that but if you were a boy you would say noo-nah

Since there are so many thumbs down about the meaning of oppa and unni how are we supposed to know the true answer - I m watching The Innocent Man and just friggin love it - even though it s in sub-titles. I love all the characters in this series.
