You can get a very good finish on MDF, if you use a spray gun. I have made lots of furniture out of MDF, and i always use oil based primer and top coat, when painting. Rub down with some 100 grit paper before hand.

The best is MDF primer to seal it before painting but acrilic undercoat/primer will do if you have nothing else. If you are using it as a worktop, put about 4 or 5 coats of emulsion on, rubbing down lightly between each coat before finishing with 2-3 coats of oil based varnish. I did this in a playroom and it's still in perfect condition 2 yrs later.

Try to stick with an oil base product primer/paint. MDF is partical board (it will swell up like a balloon!) so be aware of that when selecting your paint (stay away from water based primers/paints)

You should rough up the surface with sandpaper and use a good oil based primer, then an oil based paint. Don't use any latex paint products on MDF.

I have painted a lot of MDF and I just use regular latex paint. I have never primed it, but I think that depends on what/where it is being used. MDF paints very well!

yeah you need a primer, if you don't use one the MDF will just soak up every bit of paint you put on.
if your using a dark paint go for a dark primer, and vice versa for light paint.
any decent paint seller should guide you in the right direction.

depends on the primer and undercoat you used they may not be compatible with spray paint, paint a scrap of MDF exactly the same and try that or you may and up with the orange peel effect and ruin your work
