you might need a different type of cage if you are trying to breed them... you can find cages in the pennysaver here but not sure where you are at... try the local thrift shop... if you get a used one clean it with bleach and rinse it well then rinse it again just to be sure and then let it dry for a while... then introduce them to the new cage slowly... sometimes it freaks 'em out to be in a new space... if they freak out then put the cage beside their cage for awhile then introduce them to the inside after they are familure with it.... hope this helps.. I would reccomend straw in the bottom in one corner not yarn they could hurt themselves with yarn and straw is more natursal... they might just make teir own neast if they are ready to breed.....smile

When I had an aviary I had cockatiels, finches and a pr of parakeets in there. I learned the hard way---you can not put love birds in there. I tried putting six peach face lovebirds in there with them. My daughter called them "The green Bay Packers" because they would get in a huddle and then run and chase one of the gentler birds down. Also, putting a bobwhite quail in the bottom of my aviary was a mistake too. I looked in one day and "Lonesome George" was walking across the floor with a finch in his mouth. If you want to put a cockatiel and a parakeet together. My experience is to buy a New cage and put them in there . Birdie psychology is -- they will think they are in each others home and behave themselves.

When my female parakeet laid an egg, we cut up little pieces of yarn and some craft straw. The only problem was that her nails were too long and she got tangled up in the yarn. If you parakeet's nails are short, there should be no problem with this. Hope I helped!

My 22 year old parakeet died a few days ago. I know that newspaper is not good because they may eat it & the ink on it & mine didnt like the straw I tried. Ask around @ petshops & see if anyone has anything specificly for parakeets.
