Your doctor is a joke and talk about some serious malpractice... Go to a GI specialist... They will give you a colonoscopy and an endoscopy where they will sedate you for each procedure and stick a tube camera down your throat and in your anus to look at the large intestine, colon, esophagus, stomach, and part of the small intestine! This is the only way to diagnose the severity of acid reflux (or a bravo surgery that I had which measures the pH levels in my esophagus... Im sure you wont need this)... I was also taking gaviscon everytime I had something to eat... But I also have serious diagnosed issues with the digestive system! What you will propbably need is a proton pump inhibitor such as Nexium, Aciphex, Protonix, etc! I have reflux so bad that I have to take one twice a day! You are going to have to see a GI not a primary... In my mind primarys tend to be useless in some situations such as this one! Just because you are 19 doesnt mean this shouldnt apply to you... I was diagnosed when I was 19! Alcohol is horrible for acid reflux as well as: smoking, chocolate, caffine, spices, smoking weed, fried foods, etc! Its a total bummer but thats life... Im not allowed to drink due to the severity of my reflux! Good Luck to you! If you have questions let me know! They will sedate you for both procedures and the sedation causes amnesia so you wont remember a thing! Trust me I have had at least 3 endoscopies and two colonoscopies and I am 23! I have Acid Reflux, Hiatal Hernia, Gastritis, Colonic Inertia, etc... No Im not overweight but it is suggested that some overweight people may be subject to reflux! Stress also kicks up reflux as well!

Chronic heartburn is usually from acid reflux - stomach acid is getting past the little valve and into your esophagus. You also should know some natural ways to treat your heartburn. Learn them here https://bitly.im/aMG6Z
The most immediate thing you can do is to stop drinking coffee and cola. Smoking is not good either, but that might be harder to stop. Don't over-eat. Don't lie down too soon after eating. Don't burp too much - this carries acid up with the burp.
heartburn the most common symptom of acid reflux disease (also known as gastroespohageal reflux disease, or GERD). Heartburn feels like a burning pain in the center of the chest. It is caused by acid from the stomach backing up into the esophagus. is a symptom of acid reflux disease (GERD) Also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

You should see a gastroenterologist, and if the doctor you are referring to is one, then find another.
There are a variety of different medications that you can try - some work well for one person, and some work better for others. You may need an EGD (upper endoscopy) to find out what is going on and guide therapy.
As a last resort, there is a surgical procedure (called a Nissen fundoplication) where they wrap a piece of stomach around the esophagus to stop the reflux. It can be done through a laparoscope many times.
Good luck!

I was diagnosed with AR about 10 months ago and they said the biggest thing that causes it is your eating habits. Try switching to less acidic food and eating fresher foods, avoid fried food or foods heavily saturated in oils (olive oil I discovered is one of the worst), reducing your caffiene intake, definately watch the soda and alcohol consumption and give your stomach a good 6 months to heal before you decide to try those foods/drinks again.
Watch how much you are drinking during eating. I was told to avoid having as little beverage as possible during eating since it neutralized the acid in your stomach.
If you know you're about to eat something that's probably gonna hurt later, have some sort of dairy or something that will coat your stomach to help reduce the burn.
And if anyone cares, I'm at 21 and perfect weight. It just happens sometimes.

You should ask your doctor that and then come back and tell us because now you have us curious. I dream when I over eat (I no longer have acid reflux) so it seems reasonable to think that way.

I would diary everything you eat and score your acid symptoms out of 10 during he day. This helped me work out what foods give me the pain. In my case I found pure juice was a "killer" and so is any amount of pastry. I find that by changing my diet the symptoms have improved massively.
Try it and if you are still struggling take the evidence to your doc and he will see how bad it is and do further tests.

Try not having anything to drink at the same time as you eat - leave at least an hour between the 2.

if your doctor has not put you on either Nexium or Prilosec, get a new doctor. you are obviously miserable, and your doctor just has you on, calcium tablets? that's not enough. i've been on prilosec ever since i found out i had it. without the prilosec or nexium, you can't have spicy foods, fried foods or citrus juices. with me, being on prilosec i haven't had any problems. i can drink orange juice, i can eat fried chicken and i can eat stir fry. i would talk to your doctor again and if he keeps saying 'try the tablets', get a new doctor. without taking prilosec or nexium there's a risk of stomach cancer. good luck!
