the bbc long range forecast is expecting a slightly milder winter than normal, so chances are probably slightly less than you normally get

If you mean North East England (near Newcastle upon Tyne) then its not very good. It's still alot warmer than normal.
we had about 1 week of very bad ground frost and 2 storms, but no snow. Not looking good. (school won't close)

I'm assuming you mean east Scotland? If so, we'll get snow but not until February.
