Mike Warnke and Lauren Stratford are two excellent examples.

Moreover I know a fellow who is an evangelical Christian and he’s told me that many pastor plagiarize sermon illustrations from others and claim the events as their own.

I’ve also run into a couple of Christians that claimed they were Wiccan. (The above fellow introduced me to them thinking that we might relate.) When I quizzed them it was clear that they knew nothing about Wicca.

So what is the deal with this?

I know who Mike Warnke is, never heard of the lady you mentioned. I suppose it makes it seem more dramatic, than simply stating I was a lost sinner and God saved me and changed my life. That was my story, and I don't think too many people would pay to hear me tell my brief testimony. But you're right. It's dishonest, and it shouldn't be that way!

We're not ALL liars ;-)

They have embraced the Christ but not the law! Faith without works is just as useless as good work without faith.
The law is paramount and without it the man or woman is just deluding themselves about the lives they live.
The "ten commandments" are the law. These people have not embraced this, and as a result we Christians are read by what they do. The reading is wrong. Many people suffer for that. Do not read the man who calls himself a Christian ....read the books that explain the Christ and His mission. There you will find the truth without lies, stealing, coveting another's belongings, the lack of meditation of God on the seventh day, adulteries, cursing with God's name, idolatry of plaster saints, other gods; like money, wealth, and such, there you will find God.
And that is about the only thing that these people will admit to. The only thing they will not hide is God. All the other commandments are riddled with loopholes they have constructed for their own ministry.
If you are upset about these people that you find hypocritical, then I would suggest you go to the source.
The Bible.

Don't you think it would be more appropriate to say "a few" rather than "many"?

The fact of the matter is, if you tell an atheist you had a divine intervention of some sort, they automatically think you are deceived, or just plain lying. So if you want to think that "most" Christians are liars, then there is nothing one can do to dissaude you from that.

Please do no longer attend to any extent further of those conferences. you positioned your salvation in possibility once you do.

In situations like that, I think many of them make the claims they do, because otherwise they're just... boring.

By the same token, I've known plenty of non-theists that claimed to be psychics, or witches, or vampires, or whatever else would distract people from the fact that they were just plain old boring geeks.

Well, you have to look at the social background of most Evangelical Christians to begin with. Poor, uneducated minorities. Have you ever seen film of an evangelical christian church in the south? Looks more like an insane asylum instead of a church.

Some folks are insecure about their story - they don't know if people will accept them if they're not interesting enough.
Most Christians are not making up stories about themselves, because the fact that Jesus has changed them, and continues to change them, is good news enough.

Perhaps they misunderstood what they were doing, or are so biblically illiterate that they missed the bit about lying being against God's rules. It upsets me, too, especially since I'm Pagan. If I encounter someone who's been influenced by "ex-Witches" like these, it's hard for me to tell them the truth!

Sad to say, everyone lies, including evangelicals, six-fingered Maoris from Massachusetts, and you and me. So, why do YOU lie? Why does anybody? Please don't condemn others for it; you'll only add hypocrisy to your other sins, and you don't sound very likely to seek, or to find, forgiveness.

All humans are sinners. Not all Christians know what it means to be a Christian.

May God Bless you.
