My doggie is about 7 months old and he is very nice. The problem is sometimes he doesn't pay attention when I tell him a command but the second I put a cookie (buscuit) in my hand he instantly does the command. I would like to get him to stop needing the cookies all the time and to just listen to me. Ofcourse I will still give him treats. Also he doesn't always follow me but when my dad comes he follows him and sometimes it makes me sad because, I like to be with him. Help me please.

My maltese is very much like this. Currently, He does not always follow the command of "down" to laydown unless there is a treat involved. He use to not do anything when i tell him to sit. I found with Casper that lots of praise and petting when he did what i told him to, got him away from treats. Though I do occasionally give him treats anyways. He also knows he gets treats when he goes to our back door on his own, gives his signal to go out (a single bark or just sitting there) and doing his business.

Casper is also quite attached to my wife. When she leaves for work he has been seen sitting for quite some time at our front window waiting for her. He has been like this since we got him, as when he was a puppy I worked out of town for 3 days a week. Now he's getting to a point that he "cuddles" with me instead of her, but still prefers her almost always.

I have a 7yr old shih tzu, he is very smart, but in his younger yrs he thought that he was the boss of everything. To this day he still does, (BUT) with alot of training, He knows I am the leader of his pack. When you give your dog treats, teach the dog tricks for that treat, like stay, set roll over, speak, fetch. when you do this keep in mind that you are the boss and you control the treats, if the dog does a trick the dog gets a treat. If the dog don't do the trick, keep on the dog, show the what you want like sit put your hand on the dogs behind and make the dog sit, do this 2/3 times and your dog will catch on and the dog will learn, but you have to let the dog know that you mean business, the dog thinks he is in charge, MINE DID, but working with him, he has learned over 15 tricks just by him wanting a treat! good luck!!!!!!!

he has a connection with your dad. My dog follows me everywhere and it used to be cute.. but now I am pregnant and want to be left alone and it drives me nuts.. sorry, venting. Yes, your dog will follow you around more as he loves you more, but natually he may just have a personality 'click' with your dad.

As for the treat thing. He won't listen without it because he is waiting for the treat. Some dogs are so good at slective hearing that you really don't know that they are hearing you... they look deaf sometimes... I had a dog like this. I started saying it ONCE. Then he was in trouble... he started listening without treats pretty quick... of course I still used treats, but not for things that were expected of him

There isnt much you can do with him liking your dad better. Thats just his personality. As far as him needing the treats make him do a command for a treat then make him do one iwthout a treat (switch back and forth) and then slowly work the treats out.
