Arigatou (a-lee-ga-to-oo) (this should only be used with freinds or people who are younger)
Formal (You can use this on someone who is the same age as you) : Domo arigatou gozaimasu
very formal (someone older) : Domo arigatou gozaimashita
or arigatou gozaimasu or arigatou gozaimashita
Whichever you feel best suits the situation.

The answer is "arigatou" (ãããã¨ã), but when you want to be polite, you can say "Arigatou gozaimasu" (ãããã¨ããããã¾ã).
