im asking as someone living in the UK and i have nothing personal against christianity or any other religion. but i didnt think extreme views like i read on hear had existed for a long time.
like all none christians will burn in hell. the earth is only 6000 years old. eveloution doesnt exist. homosexuality is a sin. muslims worship a different god from christians. witches should be burned and complete lack of any humanity or religous toleration etc
is this just a small minority or is this as common in the USA(somewhere i had always assumed was one of the most civilised and inteligent countries on the planet).
if you live in the USA let me know.

I'm Canadian. My husband is American. I'll be moving there because we can make more money that way but its absolutely terrifying the things I see on here.

Yes, there are far too many religious extremists in the US and they desperately try to do exactly what you're seeing on here even if they're still a minority.

I think that its only the worst of the bunch that come online and act like this. At least, I really hope so.

But there is one thing I've come to a conclusion about. The education in the US needs to be fixed because the number of people that come onto YA that don't seem to have the remotest clue about science only shows that the American educational system is failing very badly.

Realize that the people drawn to this section are the ones who are interested in discussing their take on religion. Many such people have strong viewpoints. Most of the time religion is a peripheral issue, but still, in the US, about 2/3 of the people attend a religious service weekly. In New England, where I live, that number is much lower, so you can imagine that in other parts of the country it is much higher.

We've got a lot of territory over here. You will find the most religious regions of the country in the interior (away from the coasts) and in the South. The least religious are more urban and more educated.

The main problem is that George W. Bush and his gang are amongst these religious extremists. There are some crazy guys leading Poland, who also want that Jesus is declared "King of Poland". Some people just have nothing elso to do...

There is a problem of education in the U.S. I can understand that, a century ago, people had doubts about the evolution theory or that they found hard to believe that the Earth is not flat. But nowadays, with the developments of genetics, cloning, biology and medicine, it is clear it is no longer a theory but reality.
We can see that viruses can evolve within months, so why not monkeys over a longer period?

There are just blind religious extremists!

We are a large country with different groups. Yes we do have a lot of extremists. It also has to do where you live. I am in NY which is more secular then a lot of parts of the country.

Europe is not empty of them either. In Poland there is a crazy political party called LPR(liga polski rodzin) Legion of polish families. They think that a baby should be born even if it will kill the mother. However both USA and Europe have less extremist then Middle east or Africa.

The United States is without a doubt among the most religious first-world countries. I don't have any sources on me, but apparently only Turkey has a higher percentage of creationists who don't think evolution happened. Or was that belief in literal angels? I'm sorry, I can't remember.

Anyhow, yes. It might not be quite as high as it is on Y!A, but in the Bible Belt especially there are indeed a lot of extremists in the USA.

I don't live in the USA. I don't know if I would describe myself as an atheist or just having different views to the majority of people. The one thing that constantly astounds me about religion is the amount of deaths and wars that have and are still happening. All in the name of God!
I wish people could just accept other people as just that - people, all humans - and could try and live more peacefully.

There are if you live where I do. Smack dab in the middle of the bible belt. Preaching people on every corner and door-to-door religious salesmen. Its a pain in the butt!

extremist is saying hey convert or die, no one does that here.
